Jay Payton is set to come off the disabled list Friday, the Washington Post reports. He's returning from a hamstring injury. While Payton will join the Orioles for the first time, manager Sam Perlozzo may not insert him as a starter right away. Perlozzo said this week that Payton will be "a little bit behind" and he doesn't want to rush him. Payton's addition likely means a demotion for Jon Knott.

Jay Payton played six innings in an extended spring training game Tuesday, and will play the next two days in a rehabilitation stint with Triple-A Norfolk, the Washington Post reports. Orioles Manager Sam Perlozzo said it's not a certainty that Payton (hamstring) will become the regular left fielder once he returns from the DL. "He is a left fielder and he is a center fielder," Perlozzo said when asked if Payton was the team's left fielder. "We'll see how he is. We want to make sure that he is good. He's going to be a little bit behind."

Payton is eligible to return from the DL next Wednesday, but it's uncertain if he'll be ready by then. "I would just like to be close," Payton said. "I'm not going to try to come off three or four days early just because the 11th is the day I can come off. I'm going to come off when I feel good and I'm ready to play and I feel like I don't have to worry about it the rest of the year."
