Depending on how his rib cage fracture responds to his work in a simulated game yesterday, Tim Wakefield could rejoin the Red Sox next Wednesday or Thursday, according to the Boston Herald. "Everything felt OK, although my warmups took a little longer than normal," said Wakefield. "I don't want to treat this as spring training - I want to go out there and give the team a chance to win." He hasn't pitched since July 17 because of the injury.

Tim Wakefield was scheduled to throw off the mound on Tuesday, but wasn't feeling well enough, so he played catch instead, according to the Providence Journal. "I don't know that I'd be any better, but I'd like to be able to be on the field," said Wakefield. "I'm doing everything I can to get back on the field, but I couldn't pitch right now."
August 20, 2006
Earlier this week, Red Sox manager Terry Francona said he thought Tim Wakefield could return to action next Sunday, but he backed off the prediction yesterday, according to the Boston Globe. Francona said Wakefield has soreness where his rib cage was fractured. More should be known about Wakefield's status after he throws a side session tomorrow.
August 17, 2006
Tim Wakefield is shooting for an August 27 return against the Mariners, according to the Red Sox website. "As soon as he can pitch, he's pitching. He can rehab right out there in the bullpen," said manager Terry Francona. "I think we'd like to get him back. If his knuckleball is moving, it's gonna move here just as well as in Triple-A. He'll be fine."
August 17, 2006
Tim Wakefield, who is out with a stress fracture in his rib cage, is expected to be game-ready for Boston's series against the Mariners late next week, according to the Boston Herald. He will not require a rehab start in the minors.
August 15, 2006
Tim Wakefield experienced discomfort after his first throwing session in nearly a month Monday, meaning that he won't come off the DL to start against the Yankees next week as originally hoped, according to the Boston Herald. "It's frustrating to me because I want to be on the field," he said. "I feel I should be farther along but I have to listen to the doctors and listen to my body. It's a slow process. It's not a muscle injury. It's a bone injury and you have to wait until it heals." Wakefield hasn't pitched since July 17 due to a stress fracture in his rib cage.
August 12, 2006
Manager Terry Francona said that Tim Wakefield is taking "baby steps" in his return from a stress fracture in his rib, according to the Boston Globe. Francona said he'd like to have Wakefield back a week from Monday for the finale of a five-game series against the Yankees. "We're going to need a pitcher that day," Francona said, "and he would be a good one to have. I talked to him the other day and said, 'Give yourself something to shoot for.' If he can't do it, we're not going to do something silly. I don't know, quite honestly, if that's realistic."
August 8, 2006
Tim Wakefield is playing catch at distances up to 120 feet, according to the AP. "He's chomping at the bits," manager Terry Francona said. "At the earliest, I think he's a couple of weeks away and that may be optimistic." Wakefield will likely throw off of a mound on Monday.

Tim Wakefield is working out on the bicycle and in the pool as he recovers from the stress fracture on the right side of his ribcage, according to the Boston Herald. "He is getting better, but he's still got a long way to go," said manager Terry Francona. Wakefield will be unable to begin throwing until after the current seven-game homestand ends on Thursday.
July 20, 2006
As expected, the Red Sox placed Tim Wakefield on the DL on Thursday, retroactive to Tuesday, according to the AP. Wakefield, who had suffered from back pain during his last several outings, has a stress fracture in his rib cage. He is expected to be out for at least three weeks. The Red Sox will likely call up Kason Gabbard to replace Wakefield on the roster.
July 20, 2006
The Boston Globe reports that Tim Wakefield will miss at least the next three weeks after extensive testing revealed that he has a stress fracture in his rib cage. It's not clear what caused the injury, but he had to leave Monday's start early due to the problem. The Red Sox are expected to place him on the DL today, and probably will add Kason Gabbard from Triple-A Pawtucket to start Saturday's game.
July 19, 2006
If Tim Wakefield feels his sore back is healthy enough, he'll start Saturday's game against the Mariners. However, it appears more likely that the Red Sox will recall Kason Gabbard from Triple-A Pawtucket to start that game and give Wakefield more time to rest. "Wake's sore, and he's been sore, he's a tough guy," manager Terry Francona said. "I don't think we're in any rush to put him on the DL. Let this thing settle down, and see where this thing is at." Gabbard is 1-3 with a 4.97 ERA in five Triple-A starts this season.
July 18, 2006
Though Tim Wakefield had a bone scan and a CAT scan on his sore back on Tuesday, the results weren't disclosed, according to the AP. The Red Sox will monitor his progress before determining if the knuckleballer will go on the DL. "He's been hurting for the last couple of weeks," said Wakefield's personal catcher Doug Mirabelli. "He's just battled through it." As of now, Wakefield is still scheduled to start on Saturday against the Mariners.
July 17, 2006

July 15, 2006
Tim Wakefield has seen his sore back improve recently, but the Red Sox are still considering holding his next start back by a day as a precaution, according to the Boston Herald. “He threw a bit (yesterday) and did better, but if we need to, we reserve the right to bump him back one more day to Monday,” manager Terry Francona said. “We have to make a (roster) move anyway and we can make that (tomorrow) if we need to.” So if Wakefield doesn't start on Sunday against the A's, he'll go on Monday against Kansas City.

An MRI on the back of Tim Wakefield revealed no damage, according to the AP. However, he's still dealing with a lot of pain. "We're hoping the time off will help his pain ease off a bit," manager Terry Francona said. "I don't think there's anything structurally wrong except the fact that he's got that knot in his back that moves around and it hurts. I hope the ten days off will be just what the doctor ordered."
July 9, 2006
An MRI taken on the back of Tim Wakefield yesterday came back negative, according to the Boston Globe. However, if the pain persists, he'll undergo another MRI later next week on his ribs. "It feels a lot better than it did [Friday]," Wakefield said. ``It's been going on for about a month. Originally there was pain in my lower back, in Detroit and New York. That got better, then this kind of flared up, between my shoulder blades and my spine on the right side. So the action of throwing is like sticking me with a knife in my back."
July 8, 2006
