Wakefield currently figures into the Red Sox's rotation plans next year, although if the team decides to bring back Curt Schilling, it's at least conceivable the knuckleballer could be used as more of a long man. |
| November 2, 2007 The Red Sox must decide by today whether or not they'll pick up Tim Wakefield's $4 million option for 2008, according to the Boston Herald. Given the inflated prices in today's market, they are expected to pick it up. One interesting thing about Wakefield's contract is that the Red Sox hold a perpetual $4 million option on the knuckerballer. This means when the Sox exercise Wakefield's option, they automatically receive a $4 million option for the following year. So, basically, they can sign Wakefield to a $4 million deal every year until he retires. |
