As expected, the Red Sox exercised their $4 million option on Tim Wakefield Friday, according to the AP. Wakefield currently figures into the Red Sox's rotation plans next year, although if the team decides to bring back Curt Schilling, it's at least conceivable the knuckleballer could be used as more of a long man.

The Red Sox must decide by today whether or not they'll pick up Tim Wakefield's $4 million option for 2008, according to the Boston Herald. Given the inflated prices in today's market, they are expected to pick it up. One interesting thing about Wakefield's contract is that the Red Sox hold a perpetual $4 million option on the knuckerballer. This means when the Sox exercise Wakefield's option, they automatically receive a $4 million option for the following year. So, basically, they can sign Wakefield to a $4 million deal every year until he retires.

The Red Sox left Tim Wakefield off the World Series roster due to his sore right shoulder, according to the AP. "In dealing with this problem I've had for the last two months, it seems like my recovery time is getting longer and longer and longer and I just don't think it's fair to the other 24 guys on this team if I go out there and maybe I pitch well and maybe I don't," Wakefield said. Wakefield made a start for the Sox in the ALCS, allowing five runs 4 2/3 innings. Manager Terry Francona did not formally announce who would take Wakefield's spot on the roster, although it's been speculated that Jon Lester could start Game 4 for Boston.
