The Cardinals announced Sunday that Scott Rolen will have surgery on his left shoulder and miss the rest of the season. He has a torn labrum and was told he will need six months to rehabilitate it after the surgery. He is expected to return sometime during in spring training.

He's expected to decide within a week whether he will try to play through it this season and miss the start of next season or simply have the procedure now.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Scott Rolen had his ailing shoulder examined Friday by team physician Dr. Timothy Kremchek, who presented season-ending surgery as an option for Rolen. "I have a decision to make," Rolen said. "It's a very personal decision and something I prefer to handle in private rather than publicly."

The Cardinals placed Scott Rolen on the 15-day disabled list Friday to rest his surgically repaired left shoulder, according to the AP. Rolen was injured May 10 in a baserunning collision with Dodgers first baseman Hee-Seop Choi and missed 33 games following surgery. He was hitting just .235 with five home runs and 28 RBI this season.

An MRI on Monday determined that Scott Rolen has mild tendinitis in his left rotator cuff, and his availability will be limited for the next three-to-six weeks, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Rolen didn't play last night but is expect to play tonight. "We're optimistic that this is a situation that we can get under control and, at least at this point, it doesn't warrant putting him back on the disabled list," said Dr. George Paletta, head of the Cardinals' medical staff. "The plan is to play him semi-regularly."

Scott Rolen decided after Sunday's game to pull out of the All-Star Game because of his problematic right shoulder, according to the AP. Morgan Ensberg will take his place on the roster. "I came to the ballpark with my bags packed for Detroit," Rolen said after Sunday's game. "I talked with the medical staff and they said it was best to rest it for four days."
