Not only have talks between the Cardinals and Brewers regarding Scott Rolen stalled, but St. Louis GM John Mozeliak went as far to say as he didn't think Rolen would be going anywhere. "As we sit here now, I would expect Scott Rolen to be part of our team for the 2008 season," Mozeliak said to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. With a deal with Milwaukee all but ruled out, the Cards are reportedly talking with the Dodgers and Giants about Rolen.

The Cardinals have confirmed what has been speculated for weeks now: Third baseman Scott Rolen is available. "What I tried to articulate is how steadfastly we feel about not just giving him away," GM John Mozeliak said in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Can I envision Scott being part of the 2008 Cardinals? Yes. But could there be a scenario in which something else happens? We're finding that out." The frayed relationship between Rolen and manager Tony La Russa is thought to be irreparable at this point, and that is the main reason why the four-time All-Star and seven-time Gold Glove winner could be moved. However, with his big contract, shoulder woes and poor 2007 season, there probably won't be a long line of teams looking to take Rolen off the Cards' hands.

Tony La Russa has re-upped with the Cardinals, and perhaps his first order of business will be to repair a frayed relationship with third baseman Scott Rolen. "He's probably the guy, the one guy, that has issues with me," La Russa said in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I'll tell you what I told our organization. Make sure he's in our uniform next year. A healthy Scott Rolen is going to be a premium player. Probably the more upset he is with me, the better he'll play all year." La Russa and Rolen's rift began in 2005 before Rolen had shoulder surgery and worsened and became public in the 2006 NLCS when La Russa did not start Rolen in Game 2. La Russa tried to explain his disconnect by saying Rolen has indicated he would "prefer playing for a manager who just lets the guys play," a less "controlling" manager. Rolen had another shoulder surgery in September but will be ready for spring training.

Scott Rolen says the season-ending operation to clean up scar tissue in his shoulder will be scheduled soon, the AP reports. The procedure is expected to sideline him 6-8 weeks. "Something has to be done, no question," Rolen said. "Until it's done, it's futile."

The Cardinals placed Scott Rolen on the disabled list on Friday. He's battling a shoulder injury and likely will undergo surgery to repair the problem, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He'll be examined further next week, at which point we should know whether surgery will be required. Regardless, it's unlikely he'll play again this season.
August 31, 2007
Scott Rolen will fly to Cincinnati Friday morning to see Dr. Tim Kremchek, who performed the second of two surgeries on Rolen in 2005 to repair a torn labrum in the third baseman's left shoulder. There's a good chance Rolen will have surgery before the end of the season to relieve tightness in the shoulder caused by scar tissue, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty is still hoping Rolen can play a bit before the end of the year. "They say the recovery time for this surgery is about eight weeks," Jocketty said. "So they could do something after the season." Even if Rolen doesn't have surgery yet, he's likely to be placed on the DL today so that the Cards can recall Miguel Cairo from Triple-A Memphis to help out at third.

It's possible that Scott Rolen has played his last game of the season. The third baseman was out of the lineup Wednesday and Thursday and will have his ailing shoulder re-evaluated Friday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Rolen said he was in so much pain Tuesday that he "couldn't wait 'till I got out of the game." Trainer Barry Weinberg said of Rolen's shoulder: "Ultimately, inevitably, it will have to be corrected." When asked if Rolen could be out for the season, manager Tony La Russa said, "Yeah, that's a possibility." For now, Brendan Ryan will fill in at third for Rolen, though veteran Miguel Cairo will be called up in September and should get some time there. There's also Scott Spiezio, who is dealing with a substance abuse problem but is expected to return next month.
August 30, 2007
Scott Rolen didn't play Wednesday and will also sit Thursday because of his tender left shoulder, the AP reports. Tony La Russa said two recent cortisone shots haven't reduced Rolen's pain. "He's really feeling like he's going backwards," La Russa said. "We'll get back (to St. Louis) on Friday and we'll see where we stand." Rolen's shoulder problems go back two seasons. He had surgery in May 2005 and has had off-and-on problems ever since. "He was going to try and hang in as long as he could," La Russa said. "We'll have to find something at home to make it better."
August 22, 2007
Scott Rolen got a scheduled day off Tuesday to rest a sore left shoulder that has bothered him the last month or so, the AP reports. Rolen, who has undergone three surgeries on the shoulder, also is scheduled to get Sunday off. "Mix one in and lighten the load," Rolen said. Par for the course here - Rolen's the type of player who's seldom at 100 percent. It's no surprise his power has been missing for most of the season (eight homers, .404 slugging percentage).
August 6, 2007
The shoulder discomfort that caused Scott Rolen to have a cortisone shot last month has returned, which is why he sat out Sunday's game. "I was struggling," Rolen said in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "It didn't feel the same way as it did shortly after I took the shot. You can draw your own conclusions, but I thought it was a good idea to give it a day if possible." It's unclear when or if Rolen will get another shot. He certainly was hitting much better after getting the shot, though he was starting to struggle again in recent days, going two for his last 15.
July 23, 2007
Scott Rolen, who has been battling a shoulder injury, returned to the lineup on Sunday and went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and a stolen base. "I'm comfortable," Rolen told the AP. "I'm not hurt. I'm physically limited. My job is to go out there and play. So I'm going to play. I'm not going to hurt myself." Even with Rolen's promising night, we're still not optimistic about his second-half production, as his shoulder still isn't 100 percent.
July 22, 2007
Scott Rolen took batting practice Saturday for the first time since having an arthogram on his left shoulder, the AP reports. Rolen said he believes he will return to the lineup on Sunday. Just because Rolen's on the field doesn't mean you want to give him a fantasy spot in your lineup. He's slugging just .371 this year with a mere four homers, in part due to the shoulder issue.
July 21, 2007
It's possible that Scott Rolen, who hasn't played since Tuesday due to a shoulder injury, could return to action this weekend, but it's more likely that we won't return until next Tuesday's series opener against the Cubs, according to the AP. As for Friday, Rolen still wasn't able to take batting practice.
July 19, 2007
Scott Rolen flew back to St. Louis on Wednesday to have his sore shoulder examined, but he is expected to rejoin the team soon, the AP reports. Rolen received a cortisone injection for inflammation and tightness in his left shoulder. "I think he's fatigued," manager Tony La Russa said. "I know he's been taking a lot of batting practice lately. Sometimes you can overwork it." La Russa said he expects Rolen to meet the team Thursday in Atlanta.
June 28, 2007
Scott Rolen returned to the lineup Wednesday after missing two starts with a bruised left foot, the AP reports.
June 26, 2007
Scott Rolen received a bit of good news on Monday when X-rays on his left foot came back negative. He does have a bone bruise on top of the foot and did not play. Rolen will be a game-time decision on Tuesday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
June 26, 2007
Scott Rolen was out of the starting lineup on Monday, a day after he fouled a ball off his left foot and left early, according to the AP. He was listed as day-to-day.
June 25, 2007
Scott Rolen fouled a ball of his left foot on Sunday. "He bruised his foot," manager Tony La Russa told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "We'll see how it is tomorrow." At this point you can consider him to be day-to-day.
June 13, 2007
Scott Rolen returned to the starting lineup on Tuesday and went 1-for-3. He did not start on Sunday in order to rest his sore left hamstring. Rolen's single on Tuesday night was the 1,500th hit of his career, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes.
June 6, 2007
Scott Rolen could be back in the lineup on Wednesday. He tested his sore hamstring on Tuesday night by running, taking grounders, and participating in batting practice, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "We’ll see how I recover," Rolen explains. "Wake up and see if I can play." Fantasy owners should keep him on their benches until his status is more certain.
June 5, 2007
Scott Rolen's status for tonight's game against the Reds is uncertain due to a strained right hamstring, an injury that has forced him to miss the last two games, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Rolen is hitting .467 with a homer and eight RBI in his past 10 games, and he attributes the hot streak to an adjusted batting stance. "I looked at myself in 2004, which was probably the last time I really felt good about what I was doing," Rolen said. "I mean, something's going on here. Those were at-bats I watched to find out where I had gone and where I needed to be."
June 3, 2007
As expected, Scott Rolen sat out his second straight game Sunday to rest a strained right hamstring. "Another day of rest," manager Tony La Russa said in the AP. "We'll check him out on Tuesday." The Cards are off Monday, so they're hoping Rolen will be ready to play Tuesday.
June 3, 2007
Scott Rolen missed Saturday's game due to his strained right hamstring, and Tony La Russa plans to rest him Sunday as well, the AP reports.
June 1, 2007
Scott Rolen strained his right hamstring on Friday and left after two innings, the AP reports. Scott Spiezio moved from left field to third base, and So Taguchi entered the game.
May 30, 2007
Maybe the knock to the head was a blessing in disguise. Scott Rolen returned to action on Tuesday night and went 3-for-4 with a solo homer. He sat out on Monday after suffering a mild concussion on Sunday. We not seriously trying to joke about a concussion, but Tuesday did mark just the second time all season that Rolen collected three or more hits in a game, and it was his first homer since April 22.
May 29, 2007
Scott Rolen plans to play on Tuesday night, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Rolen sat on Monday as a precaution. He experienced "fuzzy" and "nauseous" feelings after a collision with Nationals first baseman Dmitri Young on Sunday. Concussions can be very tricky to deal with, but it sounds like Rolen is confident that his case was mild. Fantasy owners may want to wait one more day to use him, just to be safe.
May 28, 2007
Scott Rolen suffered a slight concussion on Monday when he collided with Dmitri Young, and he was not in the starting lineup on Monday, according to the AP. It's uncertain when Rolen will return to action, but concussions have a tendency to linger, so expect the Cardinals to be cautious with the third baseman.
May 28, 2007
Scott Rolen might not be able to play on Monday. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said Rolen may have suffered a concussion during a collision with Dmitri Young on Sunday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He says he's better," La Russa said. "He didn't have trouble concentrating. He could drive home. I asked him about flying tonight — he was more assured than the doctors. Whether it's a temporary thing or whatever, he got pretty banged up." Look for Rolen to be a game-time call Monday, but it doesn't look like this is a long-term ailment at this time.
April 22, 2007
Scott Rolen came into Sunday's game batting just .200 on the year, but he busted out with a 5-for-6 performance to push his average up to .268. Rolen had a home run, a triple and three singles, driving in three runs and also scoring three.
April 20, 2007
Scott Rolen returned to the starting lineup Friday against Chicago. He sat the two previous days due to food poisoning.
April 19, 2007
Scott Rolen was out of the lineup again Thursday due to food poisoning, according to the AP. It's not clear when Rolen will return to action. Scott Spiezio started at third again for St. Louis.
April 11, 2007
Scott Rolen was out of the lineup for the second straight day on Wednesday due to back spasms, according to the AP. "It's not much better, so we'll keep him out of this one. He can see our (medical) people and the doctors and, hopefully, we'll get him back this weekend," manager Tony La Russa said. The Cardinals are off on Thursday, which will give Rolen an extra day of rest.
April 10, 2007
Scott Rolen was a late scratch on Tuesday because of back spasms, according to the AP. Scott Spiezio started in his place despite suffering from flu-like symptoms.
February 26, 2007
Scott Rolen and Tony La Russa have cleared the air and agreed to move on after their public disputes last year, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The two hadn't spoken since La Russa benched Rolen for Game 4 of the Division Series, but GM Walt Jocketty helped get the two together to talk this spring. "I was involved," Jocketty said. "In a case like this, a general manager can't take sides. I'm looking out for what's best for the organization."
January 15, 2007
Scott Rolen's shoulder is in much better shape now than it was at this time last year, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I'm a different person sitting here health-wise," Rolen said. "I don't regret trying to battle through and trying to stay on the field. My regret, or my knowledge, is, hey, I was fatigued. I was hurt. I probably needed some treatment at the time. When I (did), I felt like a different person, felt like a different player." Rolen's surgically-repaired shoulder tired late last year, and he hit just .253 in the second half after batting .331 before the break.
