Mariano Rivera and the Yankees are at a standstill in their contract talkss, as the closer is still looking for a guaranteed fourth year, while the Yanks aren't willing to give him one, according to Newsday. Regardless, the Yankees are still optimistic about getting a deal done. "I think that there is a good chance that he will return to the team," manager Joe Girardi said. That's still the prevailing sentiment around baseball circles, even with the negotiations stuck. At this point, another team hasn't offered Rivera a fourth year, so he may eventually have to give in and accept the three-year offer.

Rivera has told his agents to shop him around, but it still seems unlikely he'll receive a guaranteed fourth year, considering he turns 38 later this month.

The Yankees have reportedly upped their offer to Mariano Rivera to three years, $45 million, according to the New York Times. This would be quite the payday for Rivera, considering Billy Wagner, currently the highest-paid closer, averages just $10.75 million per year.

Despite earlier comments that said otherwise, Mariano Rivera has stated that Joe Torre's departure won't affect his decision on whether or not he'll re-sign with the Yankees, according to Newsday. "I don't think [the identity of the new Yankees manager] has to do nothing, with me, in terms of signing with the Yankees," Rivera said. Even with this statement, it still seems likely that Rivera will test the free agent market before signing anywhere.
