Joe Borowski has reportedly been offered a minor league deal by the Red Sox, according to the Boston Herald. If the Sox sign Borowski, he would be eligible to pitch in the postseason even if he does not appear in the major leagues until after September 1. MLB rules require only that a player be part of an organization before September 1 in order to maintain postseason eligibility.

Joe Borowski's role as closer will be the subject of talks among Indians management on today's off day, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Manager Eric Wedge would not say if Masa Kobayashi will take over that role. "I'm not going to speculate on that. It takes us down a road that doesn't do anyone any good," he said.

Cleveland reliever Joe Borowski hasn't been the picture of stability this season but hopes of a reversal of fortunes had come alive with better results over recent weeks. Tonight he may have ruined that momentum, out of position for the save but still in the game in the ninth in the 8-5 loss to Minnesota. Borowski pitched one inning, giving up two runs (both earned) on three hits on just 24 pitches.

"It's feeling as normal as normal can be right now," Borowski said on MLB.com. "Hopefully, it just keeps progressing." The velocity on Joe Borowski's fastball was clocked around 85 MPH Monday when he gave up a grand slam to Torii Hunter. The Indians aren't worried yet, but they are exploring the possibility that Borowski may be hurt. "We'll see how he feels [Tuesday] and go from there," manager Eric Wedge said on MLB.com. "There's nothing that says he isn't [healthy]. We'll see after he plays catch." Borowski is probably unavailable tonight after pitching two straight days, and Rafael Betancourt is definitely unavailable after pitching three straight days, so if the Indians need someone to close they'll likely turn to Jensen Lewis or Rafael Perez. We'll keep you posted on how Borowski is feeling.

Joe Borowski gave up a grand slam to Torii Hunter on Monday night to pick up a loss and a blown save against the Angels. And so it starts. Borowski figures to be a high-wire act all season as he attempts to hold on to the closers job in Cleveland. For those of you out there hoping Rafael Betancourt will step into the void, he too struggled on Monday night allowing one run in an inning as he has now allowed a shocking nine hits in 3.1 innings.

In an attempt to avoid a fall from last season's success, the Cleveland Indians are opening the bullpen to a full-blown competition rather than put full faith in Joe Borowski , according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. To create an ideal situation for this season, the Indians have brought back the entire bullpen with the addition of Japanese right-hander Masa Kobayashi. They've also opened one of the seven spots for competition with holdover Tom Mastny competing against spring-training invitees Jorge Julio, Rick Bauer, Scott Elarton and others. GM Mark Shapiro is reluctant to say what lies ahead for 2008. Shapiro and scouts note Rafael Betancourt could be the player to watch should Borowski struggle while Kobayashi, Rafael Perez, and Aaron Fultz could be viewed as optimal setup men.

Borowski will start the season as the Indians closer, but if he continues to make his managers heart race every time he takes the hill, the Indians might turn to Rafael Betancourt or Masahide Kobayashi to take over that role.

Joe Borowski is just five pounds lighter (212 pounds) than he was at the end of last season, but he's apparently in much better shape, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "Joe is in tremendous shape," said manager Eric Wedge. "He's committed to himself and this game physically later in his career maybe like no other reliever I've seen." Borowski said he took to a challenge from director of media relations Bart Swain to be the leaner of the two when camp began.
