Shawn Estes cleared another hurdle as the issue of his elbow never came up while discussing his two-hit, 6.1-inning outing against the Mariners, reports the Union Tribune. "On paper, we should have won that game," said Estes, who departed with the Padres leading 2-1. As for himself: "My curve was not working too well (Sunday). But my two-seamer (fastball) was breaking down and away from the righties. "What is the point of throwing the breaking ball if the fastball is working like it was? Keep it as simple as you can."

Manager Bud Black said Estes looked completely different from the pitcher he saw in late March before the Padres requested Estes go to Triple-A Portland. Black saw improvements in Estes' velocity, command and breaking stuff.

The Padres have purchased the contract of lefty Shawn Estes from Triple-A Portland, according to the AP. The team also placed pitcher Kevin Cameron on the DL. Estes was 4-2 with a 3.67 ERA over six starts for Portland, and Manager Bud Black said, "I think he’s best suited to start, but we’ll see how it plays out."

The San Diego Padres have made the final cuts to solidify their major league roster for opening day, according to MLB.com. Pitchers Shawn Estes and Adam Bass will both be move to the minor league camp along with outfielder Chip Ambres. The Padres also optioned infielders Oscar Robles, Craig Stansberry and Brian Myrow to their Triple-A affiliate in Portland.

Shawn Estes had another rough start for the Padres, and fell to 0-3 for the spring as he allowed five runs on 10 hits over 4.2 innings of work against Arizona. His ERA now sits at 15.00, and will be hard-pressed to earn a spot in the Padres' rotation at this point.

Shawn Estes got blasted for six runs in two-thirds of an inning Friday. Estes hasn't pitched since April of 2006 because of elbow surgery but is hoping to make the Padres rotation as a non-roster invitee. Obviously he didn't do himself any favors today.

Shawn Estes has emerged as a dark horse to be the Padres' fifth starter, according to the Denver Post. While the soft throwing Estes is well past his 15-minutes at the big league level, any pitcher that starts half of their games in PETCO Park has to be a NL-only fantasy consideration.

Shawn Estes will enter spring training with a clean bill of health, Padres GM Kevin Towers told the San Diego Union-Tribune. Estes hasn't pitched since undergoing reconstructive elbow surgery in June of 2006. He'll attempt to win a spot in the Padres rotation.
