Brian Giles' four hits on Friday night offers evidence that the Padres right fielder is the hottest hitter on a club with cold bats. April 3, 2008
Brian Giles may have totally lost his power stroke but the man can still hit and on Wednesday he did just that with three hits and three RBI for the Padres. Always a high OBP hitter, Giles is slightly miscast as a leadoff hitter for the Padres because of his lack of speed, but he still should be a fine fourth of fifth type outfielder in deep mixed leagues.

It is looking like Brian Giles will be ready for Opening Day, according to MLB.com. Giles is progressing favorably enough from his off-season microfracture surgery on his knee to get into Cactus League games this week. So far, his knee has handled every rehabilitation dished his way.

Brian Giles returned to action on Friday afternoon on a practice field in a Minor League game, according to MLB.com. Giles, who had surgery on his right knee at the start of the off-season, batted four times in the first three innings and received a paucity of hittable pitches. He faced four different pitchers and hit a run-scoring single up the middle, walked twice and struck out looking. Giles did not play defense or run the bases, and he won't Saturday either, when he plays in another Minor League game. But he could be doing so by Monday in Tucson, AZ, weather permitting, as rain is a possibility on Sunday and Monday. It's all part of the plan Giles and the Padres have in place to get him ready for the regular season. "Opening Day is our date," Giles said. "We've kind of got a schedule from here until we're done with camp with the idea of being ready on the 31st [of March]."

Giles is entering the final year of his current contract, though the Padres have a $9 million option with a $3 million buyout clause for 2009.
January 17, 2008
Brian Giles, recovering from offseason surgery on his right knee, expects to be ready to play opening day. "Barring any setbacks, I think it's realistic to say I'll be ready to start the season," Giles said to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "There hasn't been one setback yet, no pain, no swelling. I feel like I'll be ready to go for the first spring training game. But there's no reason to press it in spring training. My guess is that I'll hit in minor league games for the first week to 10 days. But this was also a more significant injury and operation than what I thought."
