Brian Giles underwent microfracture surgery on his right knee. The operation was performed on Wednesday. He had trouble with his right knee since late April, and the amount of damage surprised the doctors. “They found it hard to believe he was able to go out there every day with very little cartilage in the knee,” general manager Kevin Towers tells the San Diego Union-Tribune. “He's not going to be able to put much weight on the knee for a couple of months. He should be able to play in some spring training games, but the docs think he should be ready for Opening Day.”

The right knee bone bruise Brian Giles is dealing with is similar to the injury that the now-retired Bret Boone had in 2000, which is not a good sign for the Padres. Boone missed more than 30 games late in the 2000 season with the ailment and said it was still bothering him early in the offseason, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Giles has even put in a call to Boone to see what he should expect in regards to the healing process. "I'd like to know what he experienced when he had his injury," Giles said Sunday. "I'm sure I'm experiencing the same frustration." Giles has already missed 20 games and will be out at least another week. "I'm frustrated," he said. "But I can't play until it's ready.
