The Cardinals signed reliever Braden Looper to a three-year, $13.5 million contract. Looper will work as a setup man, but his contract includes incentives for games finished in case he becomes the closer at some point. Current closer Jason Isringhausen is signed through 2007 with a club option for 2008.

As expected, the Mets declined their 2006 option on the contract of Braden Looper on Monday, according to the AP. Looper lost his job as the team's closer late in the season. He went 4-7 with a 3.94 ERA, converting 28 of 36 save chances while pitching in 60 games. "Even though we declined Braden's option, we still plan on having conversations with his agent," Mets GM Omar Minaya said.

Braden Looper is expected to undergo an MRI on Thursday to determine the extent of the shoulder problems that have bothered him all season, according to the New York Daily News. Looper is likely to be a free agent this offseason, as the Mets will almost certainly refuse his option.

Since the Mets have faded in the race to the postseason, Braden Looper may not exclusively be used to close games the rest of the way, according to the New York Daily News. Manager Willie Randolph indicated that he might use Shingo Takatsu and Danny Graves more the last two weeks to evaluate them for next season.

Braden Looper said he wants to stay in New York, even though it's extremely unlikely the Mets will pick up their option on him for next season that could be worth up to $6 million, according to the New York Daily News. Looper has said he would even consider pitching in a setup role next season. According to a team insider, Looper has been pitching with an injury behind his right shoulder that likely would've prompted surgery had it been detected before the season.
