The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Chris Carpenter went through another bullpen session and said, "I felt stronger than I did Friday." He is recovering from a shoulder strain. His next session is slated for Wednesday, and will be more intense, and Carpenter added, "We want to make sure it's right before I do anything else."

Chris Carpenter said his muscle strain is the "best-case scenario," according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He said, "I definitely felt good after leaving the doctor's office because I wasn't sure what it was going to be. You don't know how severe, you don't want it to have anything to do with the (rotator) cuff, because that's bad news. The doc said this was best-case. He said it was like having a mild hamstring strain in your shoulder." His strain is Grade 1, which is the mildest of all tears.

Chris Carpenter, coming back from Tommy John surgery, is slated to make his second rehab start on Friday, this time for Triple-A Memphis, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Carpenter tossed four scoreless innings Sunday for Double-A Springfield, throwing 61 pitches. He said he expects his target to be at least 70 on Friday.

Chris Carpenter only allowed one hit over four shutout innings in his first rehab start Sunday, and reported no physical issues following the outing, but he was not pleased with his command, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Carpenter said, "I'm going to go by my stuff. And obviously command of my fastball today is not where it needs to be." The Cardinals had put Carpenter on a limit of 60-70 pitches. After using only 10 to retire the first three hitters he faced, Carpenter needed 16 pitches in both the second and third innings and 19 more to get out of the the fourth. He walked four, while missing with 30 of his 61 pitches.

Chris Carpenter had a strong simulated game on Monday and today the team is going to discuss when and where he'll start a 30-day rehab assignment as he continues to recover from his right elbow surgery, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Carpenter said (in a text message to Tony LaRussa) that he is confident with the way things are going. GM John Mozeliak said he plans to meet with La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan to map out the next phase of Carpenter's rehab.

It was his second competitive appearance in such conditions since elbow tenderness slowed his return from surgery. The Cardinals are thinking about moving Chris Carpenter to the bullpen, at least in the short term. "I think we have to consider that," general manager John Mozeliak informs MLB.com. Carpenter had a setback earlier this month, and although he did not need more elbow surgery, his return date has been delayed. He is currently throwing in Florida and may face hitters in about one week.

Chris Carpenter received good news Tuesday when Dr. James Andrews confirmed Cardinals team doctor reports that there was nothing structurally wrong with the right-hander's elbow, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Carpenter, who halted his rehab from Tommy John surgery last week after experiencing pain, said he plans to throw a side session before going back to Florida to extended spring training so he can face hitters. "Everybody is different," Carpenter said. "Unfortunately mine went through pain at 10 ½ months. If I had this issue in February when I first started throwing, there would be no issue. … My ligament and my reconstruction looks good. Everybody reacts differently. It's just a frustrating process."

Chris Carpenter has had a setback in his return from Tommy John surgery. The ace had further soreness in his elbow following a session on Wednesday, and Dr. George Paletta checked out the elbow on Friday. Carpenter had an MRI, and while results were not available, there is no damage to the ligament, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes. The pitcher will seek a second opinion. "Could 'Carp' still pitch for us sometime this year? We think so," general manager John Mozeliak explains. "But will he pitch sometime around the All-Star break like we were hoping? That's not likely."

Chris Carpenter threw 48 pitches on Wednesday and is scheduled to work a simulated game Monday in Jupiter after experiencing what one team source described as a recent "hiccup" in his recovery from elbow ligament replacement surgery, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Carpenter disclosed mild discomfort around the elbow to club trainers after a recent throw and was shut down for several days, according to the team source. He has rebounded favorably and is once again throwing without discomfort. GM John Mozeliak stated, "It's been pretty seamless so far. I don't know if I would even call this a hiccup."

Chris Carpenter is set to throw living batting practice on Monday as he continues to recover from his elbow surgery, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Last week he introduced breaking pitches into his bullpen sessions, and should he get through two sessions this week comfortably, he can upgrade to the batting practice that pitchers usually throw in the opening weeks of spring training. Carpenter stated, "We've still got a ways to go, but so far, so good. The harder I start throwing and the more effort I'm going to be putting into these breaking balls, that will give us a sign of what's going on." The team added that they don't want to push him too fast.

So long as his elbow responds well, he should soon move to pitching on flat ground before eventually stepping onto a mound. Carpenter is recovering from July Tommy John surgery and remains months away from pitching in a game.

Chris Carpenter, who had Tommy John surgery last July, plans on being part of the Cardinals' rotation for a significant portion of the coming season. "The question is whether it's going to be before the All-Star break, after the All-Star break or somewhere in between," Carpenter said to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Carpenter made three sets of 25 tosses from 90 feet Wednesday. He plans to reach 120 feet next week and 150 feet in early March before throwing off a mound before the end of camp. If the former Cy Young winner's rehab goes perfectly, he could return in June, but it's nearly unheard of for someone to go through the recovery process without having a minor setback or two. "They say 10-12 months (recovery) depending on how many times you slow down," he said. "There might be some soreness here and there that causes you to miss a few days. That's to be expected. What you want to avoid is missing a week or more."

Chris Carpenter is throwing again and feeling good as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, the AP reports. "I just started tossing on Monday," Carpenter said Saturday at the 12th annual Cardinals Winter Warm-Up. "I haven't had any problems so far. I haven't had any soreness, but I know it's still going to be a long process." There's no rigid timetable for when Carpenter will return to the rotation, but he probably won't be back until the All-Star break.
