The Cardinals picked up their 2005 option on the contract of Chris Carpenter on Friday, according to the AP. Despite missing the entire postseason with nerve damage in his right biceps, Carpenter was the Cardinals' best starting pitcher during the regular season with a 15-5 record and a 3.46 ERA.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa ruled out Chris Carpenter for the first round of the playoffs on Thursday because of an arm injury, according to the AP. Carpenter has been sidelined with nerve damage in his right biceps since September 18th. He had hoped to miss only one start for St. Louis before a medical exam last week revealed the problem. "He's still not normal," La Russa said. "He's not even factoring into the first round."

"A problem, I guess, with a nerve is a timetable is nonexistent," Carpenter said. "It could be today. It could be tomorrow. It could be a month. It's going to get better. They just don't know how long."
