The Cardinals and Chris Carpenter agreed on a five-year contract Monday worth $65 million, according to ESPN.com. Carpenter had been signed through next year as part of a contract that called for a $7 million salary in 2007. The Cardinals exercised his 2008 option at $9 million as part of the new agreement, and added guaranteed years for 2009, 2010 and 2011, plus a club option for 2012. The 2012 option, if exercised, would bring Carpenter an additional $12 million, making the entire deal worth about $77 million.

The Cardinals announced on Thursday that Chris Carpenter will in fact start Game 2 of the NLCS, according to the AP. "It's his fifth day. That's when he's geared to pitch all year long," manager Tony La Russa said Thursday. Carpenter was originally in line to start Game 3, but Wednesday's rainout enabled the Cards to move him up. Jeff Suppan, who was originally slated to start Game 2, has been bumped to Game 3.

Because Game 1 of the NCLS was rained out on Wednesday, Cardinal ace Chris Carpenter could be available to start Game 2 on full rest instead of Game 3, as scheduled. "That is his fifth day. You've got to seriously think about what that means. It's up for grabs in my opinion," St. Louis manager Tony La Russa said.

Chris Carpenter, who left his start on Saturday after eight innings due to dehydration and cramping, had no problems on Sunday and did his regular running routine, according to the AP. There's no reason to think he won't be able to make his next start.
August 27, 2006
Dealing with cramping muscles, Chris Carpenter threw a few warmup pitches before the ninth inning Saturday and decided he couldn't go any longer, according to the AP. "I was trying as hard as I could to play it down and I went out there and everything -- my toes, my forearms and my calves -- were locking up," Carpenter said. "I wasn't going to go out there and hurt the team's chance to win." Despite allowing only one run in 8 innings, Carpenter failed to pick up the win.

Chris Carpenter threw a bullpen session on Sunday and is on track to make his next start on Wednesday, according to the AP. Carpenter's status had been a question mark because of a bruised thumb he suffered in his last outing.

Carpenter (4-2, 2.63 ERA) is scheduled to throw another bullpen session on Friday. He said he thought he would return to the rotation on either June 5 or 6, but manager Tony LaRussa said Carpenter's return could be pushed back to later that week. Anthony Reyes was called up to replace Carpenter.

Even though Chris Carpenter reported no discomfort after playing catch on Saturday, it appears the Cardinals are prepared to place him on the disabled list due to the inflamed bursa sac near his rib cage, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "That seems to be the direction it's headed," said pitching coach Dave Duncan. "You evaluate the situation, and there's really no reason to risk it. Something could happen between now and Tuesday, but it's my guess we'll do something." Anthony Reyes will start Tuesday, if Carpenter can't make his scheduled outing.
