"I think that this (time off) right here will determine what is going to go on," Carpenter said. "If we can get through this and everything is fine then, from what (team medical supervisor George Paletta) tells me he believes it's going to be OK. If we get done through this time and it doesn't react properly, then obviously we're going to have to look at some other stuff."

Cardinals medical supervisor Dr. George Paletta confirmed Tuesday that bone spurs are the source of an elbow impingement that has forced Chris Carpenter to the disabled list, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "The tricky question that's unanswered is why did he throw fine all spring training? What happened April 1 so he woke up April 2 with a swollen elbow?" said Paletta, who added that surgery at some point this season is a possibility. Carpenter will be re-examined in 10-14 days.

Carpenter will play catch Friday, and if that goes well he will continue his usual routine with a side session Saturday and be ready for his start next Tuesday. Carpenter was originally scheduled to make his second start of the year this Friday. "I'm not even thinking about it. I'm assuming that on (Tuesday), Carpenter is going to be ready to pitch," pitching coach Dave Duncan said. "He felt a lot better (Wednesday). That was important." If it should turn out that Carpenter can't start, relievers Brad Thompson or Ryan Franklin or Triple-A starters Blake Hawksworth or Randy Keisler could get a spot start.
