April 9, 2008
Bartolo Colon, who is still nursing a strained right oblique, was examined by Boston's training staff today, this according to Providence Journal. The right-hander is "still a little bit tender," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. Francona didn't directly answer the question of whether Colon has shed a few pounds since signing with the Sox this spring as a free agent. He indicated weight isn't the most important issue with Colon's conditioning. Francona said Colon has been bothered by a similar oblique injury twice in his career. One time it kept him out of action for seven days; the other time it forced him to the sidelines for 20 days.
April 8, 2008
Bartolo Colon's exam for an oblique injury has been pushed back a day to Wednesday, according to MLB.com. The Red Sox feel that the injury is nothing more than a minor setback. "I do know that they're not going to let him do anything until he's completely pain-free," manager Terry Francona said. "We've seen these two-day things stretched to five-day things stretched to seven-day things. He's had it twice before in his career. We're going to just make sure he's pain-free before he's allowed to continue doing his stuff." Colon had been doing well in his rehab before this. Hopefully it's just a minor bump in the road.
April 7, 2008
Bartolo Colon was placed on the minor league DL and will be examined in Boston on Tuesday, the Boston Globe reports. He is dealing with some pain in his right side. "I think it's more with those types of things, we don't want it to turn into something," manager Terry Francona explains. There's not word on if Colon can currently only turn to his left when picking up items off the buffet.

Colon's last pitch registered at 95 MPH on the radar gun. With Josh Beckett slated to come off the DL this weekend, the Sox don't have any room in their rotation. However, if Colon continues to pitch like this, he should find his way up to Beantown eventually.
April 1, 2008
Bartolo Colon is scheduled to pitch the season opener for Triple-A Pawtuckett on Thursday, according to the AP. Curt Schilling is expected to miss half of the season due to his shoulder injury, meaning Colon could work his way up to the bottom of the Red Sox rotation.
March 29, 2008
The Boston Red Sox have informed pitcher Bartolo Colon he will be starting the season with Triple-A Pawtucket, according to MLB.com. Colon pitched Friday night in Boston’s 1-3 loss to the Dodgers in spring training, completing four innings of work with three hits and one run allowed, walking just one and striking out four. While the outing is a positive sign for Colon, pitching coach John Farrell reports the team would like to see Colon reach 85 to 100 pitches in one game, and the team feels that will take more time. "Ideally, we'd like to see all of our starters get stretched out to 85 to 100 pitches in Spring Training," said Farrell. "In a normal Spring Training, that's what all of our starters will get to. Whether that's two or three more starts for him at Pawtucket, I'm not going to say that's a plan etched in stone, but certainly it's kind of framework that we're working under." Colon will next pitch for Pawtucket against Indianapolis on Thursday.
March 22, 2008
Bartolo Colon took the mound in a minor league appearance at City of Palms Park on Saturday morning. Colon tossed three scoreless innings, as the Class A Lancaster Jet Hawks hosted the Twins' Class A Fort Myers Miracle. He threw 34 pitches (23 for strikes), allowed four hits, no walks, and struck out two batters. All positive signs for the former Cy Young winner. MLB.com reported that Colons fastball was lively. "His velocity was clearly plus," pitching coach Gregson said. "[He] threw a couple of really good sliders ... He's got a very good changeup and it's a pitch that I think he's going to start mixing in a little more often. I think it's going to be a good pitch for him. He threw one in his third inning of work and got very good results with it. Had a little bit of a smile on his face when he came off [the mound]." The report didn't mention what Colon registered on the radar gun. Keep abreast of Colon's success during his minor league stint.
March 19, 2008

He didn't make it out of the first inning -- the Yankees got him for four runs, three hits and three walks -- but he reported no problems with his shoulder, which is the big key for Colon.
March 13, 2008
The Providence Journal followed Red Sox Bartolo Colon's first spring start today and according to the report his appearance is complete. The right-hander threw 26 pitches (18 strikes) and allowed one run (solo homer) on two hits with one walk and one strikeout. He retired the first two batters he faced in the second inning before surrendering a solo homer to the Rays' Jon Weber, who crushed the first offering over the right-center field wall.
March 13, 2008
The Boston Globe reports that there was lots of Thursday morning talk concerning the performances, and the work, of Bartolo Colon . The report notes that manager Terry Francona is pleased with how Colon's throwing and is eager to see him in the game against a pretty good Rays lineup. Colon's next start is slated against the Yankees next Monday in Tampa. What will be more interesting than how the former Cy Young winner fairs against the Yanks, will be the velocity on his fastball. If Colon can find his arm strength and clock his semi-heater in the neighborhood of 92-94 MHP, he automatically becomes an intrigue for fantasy owners who are familiar with Colon and his ability.
March 9, 2008
Bartolo Colon tossed 43 pitches in his first batting practice of the spring on Sunday, according to MLB.com. "I think the most important thing was getting loose," said pitching coach John Farrell. "We'll just make sure that tomorrow he feels fine and we'll look to slot him into a game at some point this coming week." So long as his body responds well Monday, Colon should be slated to make his exhibition debut on Thursday, though he's expected to be limited to fewer than 30 pitches.
March 8, 2008
Bartolo Colon threw 50 pitches in the City of Palms Park bullpen Friday morning, according to the Boston Globe and cleared to face live hitters on Sunday. If the 2005 American League Cy Young Award winner continues to have no problems with his right elbow and shoulder, he will make his Grapefruit League debut either Friday vs. Baltimore or next Saturday vs. Cincinnati.
March 6, 2008
Bartolo Colon will make his spring training debut for the Red Sox on March 15, according to the Boston Globe. The former Cy Young winner had another encouraging bullpen session on Wednesday and his high 80s fastball will be put to the test in live action. The report noted that Colon threw his first breaking pitches of the spring during his session, and is ready to throw two innings of spring work. If all continues to go well, Colon will pitch batting practice Monday before facing the Reds on their next visit, Saturday, March 15.
March 5, 2008
Bartolo Colon threw what is being described as 41 impressive pitches in a bullpen session on Wednesday, 10 days before he is scheduled to take the hill for the Red Sox, this according to the AP. “The expectation was there,” Boston pitching coach John Farrell said. “...I think initially and, again, this is very premature, he’s on the positive side of those expectations.” Colon was thought to be a long shot to join the Red Sox rotation out of camp, but there is always a chance that a strong spring will change that belief. Colon is nothing more than a late round grab at this point as he still has a long way to go to reclaim his Cy Young form.
March 4, 2008
Bartolo Colon was hoping to make his exhibition debut with the Red Sox on Sunday, but manager Terry Francona doesn't think that's prudent, according to MLB.com. "I think that's too quick," Francona said. "It just doesn't follow the progression that's built into normal throwing." On Monday, Colon threw 42 pitches in a bullpen session. Francona thinks he'd like to see Colon follow that up with two more side sessions, then face hitters in batting practice before taking the mound for a game.
March 3, 2008
Bartolo Colon threw 42 pitches in a bullpen session on Monday morning. He tossed mainly fastballs and got up to 90 mph. Colon also threw some changeups. "For not being on the mound for 3 1/2 weeks, I thought he threw to both sides of the plate, he got through the glove well with good carry. A very good day for him," pitching coach John Farrell tells the Boston Globe.
March 1, 2008
The Boston Globe reports that Bartolo Colon threw another session of long toss on Friday. The former Cy Young Award winner is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session Tuesday and follow that up with three bullpens, every other day, thereafter. The team is working him up to his first scheduled game action on March 15.
February 29, 2008
If Bartolo Colon is not on Boston's big league roster by May 1, he has an out in his contract that allows him to be released, according to the Boston Globe. If he's in the minors, he'll earn $18,000 per month, while his big league deal would be worth $1.25 million. Currently, manager Terry Francona is looking at March 15 for Colon's spring debut. He'll almost certainly begin the season in the minors, but obviously May 1 will be a key date for Colon this season.
February 28, 2008
Bartolo Colon will receive his first mound action sometime next week, notes the Boston Globe. Colon told the paper on Wednesday he might be able to pitch in a spring training game as early as March 9. Skipper Terry Francona spoke favorably of Colon's arm after seeing him long-toss (at 60, 90, and 120 feet) and said, "Very pleased, probably a little bit ahead of where we expected him to be. He went through all the stuff with the medical staff, and first of all, he was very compliant, came through it with, I would say, flying colors." Coming off two straight unimpressive years because of shoulder and elbow problems, Colon said he is more than willing to start the season on the farm. Currently the former Cy Young winner has no fantasy value outside of deep AL-only formats.
February 27, 2008
Bartolo Colon may have showed up to Red Sox camp out of shape (yes, even more so than normal), but it apparently hasn't affected his arm strength. He played long toss with pitching coach John Farrell Tuesday and was throwing the ball 120 feet on a straight line with little effort, according to the Boston Globe. Given that Colon is still trying to work his way back from shoulder woes, the news is heartening. The team is still concerned about his weight, though. "We've got some work to get him right," said Farrell. "I don't know the exact number of pounds to be lost here. I think there is some self-acknowledgement on his part that he's overweight at this time and we have to arrive at a playing weight he's accustomed to." Colon's chances at breaking camp with the club on March 19 are basically nil, given how far behind he is in his throwing and the fact that he has to get in playing shape.
February 26, 2008
Bartolo Colon arrived in Red Sox camp looking overweight, likely needing to shed about 20 pounds, according to the Boston Herald. Pitching coach John Farrell acknowledged that conditioning will be Colon's biggest challenge. Farrell added that Colon is prepared to stay in camp once the club leaves for the start of the regular season. Once he's in shape, his troublesome shoulder will be the real concern.
February 26, 2008
The details are in on Bartolo Colon's new contract. Colon's base salary in the majors will be $1.25 million guaranteed, but if he's in the minors, he will earn just $18,000 a month. He could also earn and additional $5.75 million in incentives if he makes 30 starts for the Sox, according to the Boston Herald. Colon has made just 28 starts over the last two seasons because of shoulder trouble, but if he shows this spring that he's healthy he could be worth a gamble late in drafts.
February 25, 2008
It's official, the Red Sox reached an agreement on Monday with former American League Cy Young Award winner Bartolo Colon. The package is a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training, according to MLB.com. Colon is expected to report to camp on Tuesday. Pitching for the Angels in 2007, Colon was 6-8 with a 6.34 ERA; and went 1-5 with a 5.11 ERA in 2006.
February 24, 2008
The Red Sox have signed Bartolo Colon to a minor-league deal, according to ESPN.com. Colon, who is working his way back from a shoulder injury, will provide insurance in the rotation with Curt Schilling expected to miss at least the first half of the year. That's assuming, of course, that Colon pitches well and shows he's healthy this spring. If he does make the Sox opening day roster, he'd be worth a late-round gamble in fantasy.
February 21, 2008
The Post Dispatch reports that the Cardinals will consider taking a look at free agent Bartolo Colon . With Matt Clement (shoulder) questionable for Opening Day the team needs an innings eater to assist the injury riddled staff. On Wednesday morning rumors had Colon and the White Sox agreeing on a minor league deal pending a physical.
February 20, 2008
Adding a little more spice to rumors that Bartolo Colon might be close to signing with the White Sox, GM Ken Williams refused to confirm nor deny the report that came from the Dominican Republic, according to MLB.com. "I told you guys, all the rumors and all the things that kind of surface, they start to take up a large, large portion of my day," said Williams on Wednesday. "With all of the things that come out of the Internet, out of talk radio, out of blogs, all of that stuff, and I'm just not going to continue to make a habit of confirming or denying anything... Even though, believe me, there are times, and this is one of them, where I really want to say what I feel." Well, we wish he would sound off, because he's one of the few people who may actually know what's going on. The Tuesday report from Impacto Deportivo said the deal was basically just pending a physical, but manager Ozzie Guillen denied that a deal was imminent.
February 20, 2008
Despite a report from the Dominican Republic, Bartolo Colon does not appear to be close to signing with the White Sox, according to the Chicago Tribune. Manager Ozzie Guillen said he hasn't talked with Colon's representatives in a few weeks. The Sox may still ink Colon, but a deal doesn't appear to be imminent at the moment.
February 20, 2008
A report from Impacto Deportivo reports that the White Sox and Bartolo Colon have reached a preliminary agreement. Colon will reportedly take a physical and then report to camp with a minor league contract in hand. Stay tuned.
February 8, 2008
Count the Pirates among the teams watching Bartolo Colon pitch in the Caribbean World Series, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Apparently, the free agent hasn't looked very good. "For two innings, he looked great," one scout said yesterday from the Dominican. "There wasn't much after that, but you're still talking about Bartolo Colon here. This is someone who knows how to pitch." Along with the Pirates, who appear to be only slightly interested in Colon's serviced, the Astros, Royals, Indians and White Sox are teams that have shown some form of interest in Colon this offseason.
January 22, 2008
The Indians were one of the teams that had expressed interest in Bartolo Colon, but that interest has waned of late, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Colon is reportedly throwing between 87 and 89 mph with no life on his fastball. The Royals may be the frontrunner for Colon's services at this point, but it'd be a surprise if he got anything more than a one-year, incentive-laden deal.
