Aaron Boone signed a one-year contract with the Nationals on Thursday. Boone played in just 69 games last year due to knee surgery, and he's expected to serve in a utility role in Washington next year.

Aaron Boone finally has decided to call it a season. He's been out with a sprained left knee and will undergo surgery Sept. 4 to repair the damage, according to the Sun-Sentinel. "Clean it up and have a clean bill of health going into the offseason," said Boone. "I wasn't able to get over that final hump, so this is the best thing." He should be fully healed from the procedure in about six weeks.

Aaron Boone will not do any physical activity for at least five days, Fredi Gonzalez told the AP Saturday. Boone injured his left knee during a cutoff play and was placed on the 15-day disabled list June 27. The injury flared up again while trying to field balls as part of a rehab assignment Friday.

Aaron Boone stopped his rehab assignment Thursday due to left knee discomfort. Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said Boone was fielding balls when the injury flared up. "It did scare him," Gonzalez said in the AP. "It scared everybody." It's not clear how much time Boone will take off before getting back to action.
