Ramon Castro inked a two-year, $4.6 million contract with the Mets on Friday, according to the AP. "We are glad to have re-signed Ramon back," Mets general manager Omar Minaya said. "He has developed into the kind of hitter who you want to come up in clutch situations. In addition to what he brings on the field, Ramon is a tremendous presence in the clubhouse." Castro will share time with Yorvit Torrealba behind the plate. He did hit 11 homers in just 144 at-bats last year, but he's unlikely to eclipse that home-run mark in 2008 even with more playing time.

Ramon Castro was put on the 15-day disabled list, as expected, Saturday. He's dealing with a sore lower back. Sandy Alomar Jr. was recalled from the minors to take Castro's roster spot; meanwhile, Mike DiFelice will be the club's regular catcher, as Paul Lo Duca is also on the DL.

Ramon Castro said he needs to be placed on the disabled list due to his ailing back. The Mets planned to wait until Saturday before making a final decision on whether to make such a move, according to the New York Daily News. If Castro goes on the DL, the Mets would recall Sandy Alomar Jr to replace him on the roster.

Ramon Castro is still bothered by a stiff back, but said it's possible he could catch if a long game or an injury left the team shorthanded, the AP reports. "If they need me today or whatever, if something happened, I'll be there," Castro said Tuesday. Mike DiFelice got the call behind the plate Tuesday and went 2-for-4.

An MRI revealed that the lower back pain that forced Ramon Castro out of Sunday's game is a case of mild arthritis, according to SportsTicker. "This morning when I woke up my back started to hurt," Castro said. "(The pain did get heavier) a little bit (during the game). Right now I feel OK. They gave me medication and we're going to take it day-by-day and see how I feel." With Paul Lo Duca already on the DL, expect Castro to play through this minor ailment.
