With the acquisition of Edgar Renteria, Carlos Guillen will be the Tigers' everyday first baseman next year. This is good in one respect for Guillen and his owners, as it should help him stay healthy, but it's bad because 2008 is now likely to be the final year he's eligible at shortstop.

There's been talk that the Tigers want to move Carlos Guillen to first base full time in 2008 to ease the stress on his knees, but Guillen isn't quite ready to make that switch, according to the Detroit News. "At the end of the contract maybe," he said about a full-time move. "But not next year. If you're going to bring in a shortstop, it'd better be a Gold Glove (winner) -- someone with better numbers than mine." Guillen did state that he would be willing to split time between shortstop and first next year, although it remains to be seen how the Tigers will handle this situation.
