Keith Foulke underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Thursday, according to the Boston Herald. The procedure dealt with cartilage issues in the joint. Foulke should be at full strength by the start of spring training.

There were indications last night that the Red Sox were counting on Foulke to be at Camden Yards tonight for the first game in a three-game set with the Orioles. The results of Foulke's knee examination have not been released.

"It was something - as a player and an organization - we talked seriously about doing during physicals the first day of spring training," said Foulke. "At the time, I felt strong, it was like, `I don't want to do this now. I want to go out there, use spring training to get ready, and go through it.' Looking back, I wish we had done it early. But we're here right now, we're going to make the adjustment, and we're going to be better." "I've had extensive talks with him, talks with (general manager Theo Epstein), talks with our medical people," manager Terry Francona said. "This is a tough one. We're having a tough time. He's battling the knee, he feels responsible to pitch. But he's not pitching with the effectiveness we want or need. So I kind of took it out of his hands a little bit."
