Ryan Dempster is a candidate to replace LaTroy Hawkins as the Cubs' closer if the team doesn't trade for one this winter, according to the Chicago Tribune. The team has reportedly shown interest in the Brewers' Dan Kolb and Detroit's Ugueth Urbina.

The Cubs picked up their $2 million option on the contract of Ryan Dempster for 2005, according to the Chicago Tribune. Dempster was 2-2 with a 3.92 ERA in 23 relief appearances after coming back from reconstructive elbow surgery. The Cubs aren't sure at this time what role Dempster will fill next season.

The Cubs plan to recall Ryan Dempster after he makes one or two more starts with Triple-A Iowa, according to the Sun-Times. He's been out all season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Although he could work his way into the closer's role eventually, he will be used in a setup role at first.

After throwing five innings (allowing two runs on five hits) in a Tuesday rehab start, Ryan Dempster is expected to make a few relief appearances, according to the Daily Southtown. Coming back from Tommy John surgery, he could be back with the Cubs by the end of the month. It's possible he could end up in the closer's role. "I wouldn't say on Sept. 1 that he couldn't be," Cubs GM Jim Hendry said. "I'm not going to assume that Ryan Dempster is going to grow into the closer's role. But I wouldn't rule it out."

"I think it's pretty minor," Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "He'll miss a start and we'll go from there. I don't think it's anything to be overly concerned about.
