The Daily Southtown reports that Cubs GM Jim Hendry said Ryan Dempster is "50-50" for tonight's game and should be available Saturday and Sunday. Dempster took a line drive off his arm Wednesday, though X-rays were negative.

Ryan Dempster blew his first save attempt of the season on Wednesday when he allowed a run in the top of the ninth inning, but he picked up the win after the Cubs came back to win in the bottom of the 10th. Dempster also suffered a deep bruise to his forearm after fielding a comebacker to end the 10th inning, but precautionary X-rays came back negative, according the Cubs' official website.

The Cubs told Ryan Dempster on Saturday that he was leaving the rotation to become the new closer, according to the AP. Dusty Baker indicated that the move would be permanent until Joe Borowski returned from the DL. "Then we'll make a decision," Baker said. Dempster warmed up in the ninth inning on Sunday, but was never needed as Carlos Zambrano pitched a complete game.

The Cubs are trying to decide whether it's best for Ryan Dempster to remain in their rotation in the wake of Kerry Wood's latest injury, or if he should be shifted to relief to help strengthen their shaky bullpen, according to the Chicago Tribune. Dempster has been groomed as a starter since the start of spring training games in March and would probably not be available for back-to-back appearances until his arm gets acclimated to pitching on short rest.

After getting rocked last Wednesday in his first start since 2003, Ryan Dempster rebounded with a strong effort on Monday. He pitched six innings, allowing just one run (it wasn't earned) while striking out seven and walking three. Unfortunately, he didn't get any run support and picked up his second loss of the season.

A leading candidate to close games, Ryan Dempster could end up sliding into the fifth starter role for the Cubs, according to the Daily Southtown. "We'll condition Dempster as if he is a starter," manager Dusty Baker said. "We can always back him off. We'll get the workload in, in case we need (starting candidate) Glendon Rusch in the bullpen."
