Dusty Baker closed with Bobby Howry and not Ryan Dempster in Thursday's 6-5 win over the Dodgers. "Right now, Bobby is throwing better," Baker told the Cubs official site. "It's nothing to look into, but Bobby is throwing better and he's rested. With the hitters coming up, the top of the lineup about to come up, we thought it would be better to go with Howry today." Baker had given Dempster a vote of confidence earlier in the week, but apparently that didn't mean much when push came to shove in Thursday's game. Dempster has been scored on in eight of his last nine appearances, while Howry hasn't allowed a run in nine of his last 10 appearances.

Manager Dusty Baker used Ryan Dempster in the seventh inning and Bob Howry in the ninth inning Monday, but Baker insists that Dempster is "still my closer," according to the Chicago Tribune. Dempster had allowed at least one run in his last seven games. "Hopefully he can be better and better and back to the Demp we all know," Baker said.

Manager Dusty Baker said that Ryan Dempster will be the team's closer for the rest of the season, despite his struggles, according to the Chicago Tribune. Dempster is 1-8 with a 4.59 ERA and seven blown saves in 31 chances. "That's Demp's job," Baker said. "The life of a closer, a lot of times that's one reason why they move around a lot, because they're either the heroes or they fall out of favor. Look around at the guys who are relievers. You can have two great years and fall out of favor and then come back and have two or three more great years."

Manager Dusty Baker has said that Ryan Dempster is "still my closer," despite pulling Dempster during a save situation last night after he loaded the bases, according to the Chicago Tribune. Bobby Howry came into the game to get the final out and earn his third save of the year. If Dempster were to keep struggling or get traded, Howry would take over the Cubs' ninth inning role.

Although Ryan Dempster has blown five of his past 10 save opportunities, Cubs manager Dusty Baker doesn't plan to use Scott Eyre or Bobby Howry in the ninth inning, according to the Daily Southtown. "Right now Demp's the closer," Baker said. "He's going through tough times. A year ago, everyone was crying for Demp and now they're crying for somebody else. It's not easy to find somebody else, so you fix what you have."

After Ryan Dempster blew a save Tuesday, Cubs manager Dusty Baker speculated that he might start using other relievers in the closer role, but Baker and pitching coach Larry Rothschild met with Dempster Wednesday morning and opted to stick with him, according to the Daily Southtown. "We had a meeting, and I told him, 'Hey, man, you're out there again,' " Baker said. "You can't just break up the whole bullpen. It's been pretty good until recently. He's just trying to overthrow and probably caring too much. I told him to go back to his old happy-go-lucky self." Demptster rewarded them by picking up a save Wednesday night.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Ryan Dempster left the Cubs during Sunday's game to be with his wife for the birth of their first child. It's not clear if he will be back with the team for Monday's contest, but the Cubs recalled David Aardsma to give the bullpen depth, just in case.

Cubs manager Dusty Baker said Ryan Dempster is working on a changeup to go with his fastball/slider repertoire, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. He was pleased to see Dempster handcuff the Giants' Steve Finley with a changeup Saturday. "I saw Finley's reaction," Baker said. "He turned around and said, 'Wow, a changeup.' That's a pitch he is working on, and he threw a couple good ones [Saturday]."
