Ryan Dempster will prepare himself over the offseason to be a starter next year. The Cubs discussed the move during the 2007 season but didn't end up making it. "Lou (Pinella) did speak to Ryan about getting himself ready to pitch in the rotation," GM Jim Hendry told the Chicago Sun-Times. When asked who the team's closer will be next year, Hendry responded, "It has yet to be determined," Hendry said. "That will be up to Lou in spring training." The obvious two candidates would be Carlos Marmol and Bobby Howry, and if the team brings back free agent Kerry Wood, he would be another possibility.

Ryan Dempster was unavailable Wednesday due to a stomach flu. After an off day Thursday, manager Lou Pinella said he expects his closer to be ready to pitch Friday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
August 24, 2007
Ryan Dempster has been fully reinstated as the Cubs closer, Lou Piniella told the Chicago Sun-Times. "Dempster's our closer, and we'll just go with the other combination of pitchers in setup roles," Piniella said Thursday, less than two weeks after suggesting Bob Howry and Carlos Marmol would share the ninth inning while Dempster worked whenever necessary to get regular work as he regained his sharpness.
August 18, 2007
Ryan Dempster pitched a scoreless ninth inning Friday for his first save since July 24. In the last 23 games, the Cubs have only had two save opportunities.
August 12, 2007
Cubs manager Lou Piniella wants to get Ryan Dempster back on top of his game, which he plans to do by getting the pitcher more chances for game action. That means Piniella will use Dempster in the seventh and eighth inning at times, then send Bobby Howry or Carlos Marmol out to close when necessary, according to the Chicago Tribune. "So you can see him in the seventh, you can see him in the eighth, you can see him in the ninth," Piniella said. "He needs more work, and in the closer's role, you don't always get it. We'll use him in the late-inning mix with the other two. Sometimes he'll close. Sometimes we'll get him in there sooner." Piniella refused to call it a closer by committee, so presumably, if Dempster gets on top of his game again, he should resume the closing role full time.
August 3, 2007
Cubs closer Ryan Dempster gave up four runs on five hits and a walk in an inning pitched to earn the loss in Friday’s game against the Mets. It was the first earned runs he had allowed since June 10.
July 22, 2007
Ryan Dempster pitched for the first time on Saturday since going on the disabled because of a strained oblique, the AP reports. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning in a non-save situation. Lou Piniella has already indicated that Dempster will go back immediately into the closer role, when they come up.
July 20, 2007
The Cubs activated Ryan Dempster from the DL on Friday, according to the AP. He had been sidelined since June 26 with a strained left oblique. Dempster should immediately move back into the closer role.

Ryan Dempster, recovering from a strained left oblique, threw 12 pitches in one winning of work for Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday. MLB.com reports he is scheduled to throw again on Thursday. Barring a setback in the next few days, Dempster is expected back over the weekend and should immediately regain his role as the closer.
July 18, 2007
Ryan Dempster pitched a perfect inning in a rehab outing for Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday night, the AP reports. Dempster, who has been on the disabled list since June 23 because of a left oblique strain, struck out one in a 12-pitch inning against Round Rock. He's scheduled to pitch again Thursday for Iowa.
July 16, 2007
Ryan Dempster is expected to begin his rehab assignment on Tuesday. If that and another appearance Thursday go well, he'll come off the disabled list this weekend, according to the Chicago Tribune. Dempster is recovering from a strained left oblique, and it looks like he should be back in the mix against the Diamondbacks later this week.
July 15, 2007
Ryan Dempster worked a bullpen session on Saturday and said he felt well. He's expected to toss another session on Sunday before heading out on a rehab assignment on Tuesday, according to the Chicago Tribune. He's recovering from a strained left oblique, though it appears he could come off the DL in the near future.
July 13, 2007
Ryan Dempster said he felt fine after throwing off flat ground Friday. Dempster, who is coming back from soreness in his rib cage, could do some throwing off a modified mound Saturday and a full mound Sunday, according to the AP. Dempster could pitch one rehab game before rejoining the team in the middle of next week.
July 8, 2007
Ryan Dempster continues to be plagued by soreness in his rib cage and won't go to the minors for a one-game rehab assignment early this week as initially planned. Dempster hopes to return for the Cubs' second series after the break on July 16-18, according to the AP.
July 7, 2007
The Cubs were planning to activate Ryan Dempster from the disabled list following the All-Star break, but it appears that's not likely to happen now. He tried to throw off a mound Friday, only to feel discomfort in his strained left oblique, according to the Daily Southtown. "He won't be able to throw at all during the All-Star break," manager Lou Piniella said. "I don't think he'll be ready for next Friday -- but it will be a few days from there. It won't be long." We'll have to wait and see how he feels after the break, but he probably will need more time to recover than initially hoped.
June 28, 2007
Although Ryan Dempster is eligible to come back the day before the All-Star break, the Cubs are expected to keep him on the DL, take advantage of the extra time off, and then activate him when the second half resumes on July 13, the team's website reports. Dempster is out with a strained left oblique muscle. "I'm making progress," he said Wednesday. "But I was day-to-day."
June 26, 2007

June 26, 2007
Ryan Dempster threw off flat ground on Monday and will test his strained oblique on the mound on Tuesday. Manager Lou Piniella tells the Chicago Sun-Times that Dempster "felt better than [Sunday]. He'll throw off the mound [today], and that will be the determining factor in either riding it out or the disabled list."
June 25, 2007
Ryan Dempster said his strained oblique felt better on Sunday. However, manager Lou Piniella said he didn't think the closer would be ready for game action until Tuesday or possibly even this weekend, according to the Sun-Times. He should avoid a trip to the disabled list and is basically day-to-day at this point. Bob Howry picked up a save Sunday and will continue to close in Dempster's stead.
June 23, 2007
Cubs closer Ryan Dempster is suffering from a strained oblique and will not pitch until Monday at the earliest. Bob Howry will serve as the team’s closer until Dempster returns, according to the Chicago Tribune. If you are looking for a quick save or two, Howry is worth picking up. However, it sounds like Dempster will not need to go on the disabled list, so Bob’s value is very limited.
May 21, 2007
Ryan Dempster will stick with his role, for the moment. One day after rumors emerged of a move to the rotation, Dempster met with manager Lou Piniella, pitching coach Larry Rothschild, and general manager Jim Hendry, and the pitcher sang a different tune. "Obviously, we just kind of talked about things, and for right now, I'm going to go back down there and close," Dempster tells the Chicago Sun-Times. The Sun-Times reports that Piniella wants to eventually move Angel Guzman into the closer's role.

Dempster has now blown two of his last three save chances.
March 20, 2007
Ryan Dempster returned to the mound for the first time in a week, pitching an inning Tuesday in the Cubs' 4-2 loss to the Rockies, according to the AP. He had been bothered by shoulder spasms, which he described as a knot in the back of his right shoulder after his March 13 appearance against Arizona. "I definitely felt good. The ball was coming out good," Dempster said. "We could start opening today, tomorrow, and I would be ready."
