Ryan Dempster's return to the rotation is off to a great start. The right-hander allowed just two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings Thursday in a 6-3 win over Milwaukee. Dempster could wind up being a decent guy to fill out your rotation in mixed leagues, but don't go overboard in bidding for him after this one start.
March 24, 2008
The Chicago Cubs skipper Lou Piniella announced Monday that Ryan Dempster will serve as a starter in the five-man rotation, notes the Chicago Tribune. Piniella didn't announce in which order the player would serve, but it is assumed that Dempster will be No. 3 in the rotation, breaking up left-hander Rich Hill and Ted Lilly. Dempster's history as a starter if volatile. While he has upside with his strikeout potential, he can blowup a managers ERA and WHIP in a single performance.
March 20, 2008
The Chicago Cubs' starting lineup is beginning to take shape. The starting rotation is all but set. Ryan Dempster, who's made the spring move from closer to starter, allowed but a single hit and no runs while striking out seven of the 18 batters he faced on Wednesday. The right-handed veteran all but secured a slot in the Cubs starting rotation with his performance. Skipper Lou Piniella told the Arlington Daily Herald, "It's as good as I've seen him pitch." A day after Jason Marquis gave up a run on five hits in his own bid for a rotation spot, Dempster trumped his teammate with the staff's spring standout performance. Piniella could announce his starting rotation today, and probably no later than Friday. ''After this turn through the rotation, what else do we need?'' said Piniella, who almost certainly will name converted closer Ryan Dempster to fill one opening, likely the No. 3 slot. The former closer had more value in a ninth inning role and shouldn't be considered for anything outside of NL-only formats.

Dempster has been previously promised a starting role when leaving the bullpen. He has looked good so far and is reportedly feeling good. Coach Piniella added, "He came to camp in really good shape. He's maintained that. He's worked hard, and he's enthused and excited about the prospect of starting. And we told him we were committed to giving him that opportunity, and that's exactly what's happening." He also called Dempster's pitching impressive.
February 28, 2008
All indications have Cubs' right-hander Ryan Dempster, who starts Thursday's opener, already locked into the starting rotation. According to the Chicago Tribune, Dempster hasn't been a starting pitcher since 2003 in Cincinnati, before undergoing elbow reconstruction surgery that August. The paper notes that Dempster is fighting for the No. 3 spot in the rotation, and will pitch two innings today and work his way to to six by the end of the exhibition season. The rotation would look like (RHP Carlos Zambrano, LHP Ted Lilly, RHP Ryan Dempster, RHP Jon Lieber and LHP Rich Hill), if Dempster were to be a member of the starting five. This would mean that veteran Jason Marquis and youngster Sean Marshall would be working from the bullpen. Marshall could start the season on the farm.
February 26, 2008
Ryan Dempster is trying to make the move from the bullpen back to the rotation, and the Chicago Tribune considers Dempster the early front-runner to grab the No. 3 spot behind Carlos Zambrano and Ted Lilly. That puts Rich Hill in the No. 4 spot and Jon Lieber and Jason Marquis left to duke it out for the fifth spot. Sean Marshall would be a darkhorse to land a spot, while Sean Gallagher and Jeff Samardzija are not being considered. Dempster has reportedly looked great early on in camp (doesn't everyone look great at this point?), but keep in mind that he's made just six starts over the last four years.
February 19, 2008
Ryan Dempster, who is trying to make a move from closer to starter this year, has looked good so far this spring. "He's in great shape, the ball's really coming out of his hand well and he's excited about starting," manager Lou Piniella said in the Chicago Sun-Times. "He's on a mission." Dempster could end up back in the bullpen if he doesn't win a spot in the rotation, though it's not clear if the Cubs would consider re-inserting him into the closer role.
February 13, 2008
