Eric Chavez ran the bases and fielded grounders on Friday, according to the SF Chronicle. It was a good day for him, and Manager Bob Geren said Chavez could begin a minor-league rehab assignment "in the one or two-week range." He's eligible to come off the DL and join the team on May 27, and Geren said, "It's his goal right now." But Chavez is not sure he will be ready by that date, and said, "If I was a betting man, I'd say no. Before you start throwing out dates, you have to go out and play."

Eric Chavez doesn't expect to be activated when he becomes available on May 27. He is on the 60-day DL due to back problems. Chavez is able to swing without pain, but he can't handle third base duties, MLB.com reports. The club is not prepared to bring him back as a DH.

Eric Chavez fielded grounders Thursday for the second straight day and felt even better this time than he did after the first workout, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Coming back from a back ailment, Chavez is still a ways away from starting a rehab assignment.

The A's received some good news on Wednesday when Eric Chavez was able to take grounders and report that he felt no pain in his injured back, according to MLB.com. "It went fine," Chavez said. "They hit everything right at me, and there was no pain, so it went well." The team hopes that Chavez will be able to return on May 28th, though there certainly are more hurdles to overcome. "Hitting and throwing, [my back] feels as good as it could, health-wise," he said. "It's going to take a while with ground balls, though. It'd be great if [opponents] could just hit the ball right at me."
