Julio Lugo has agreed to a four-year, $36 million contract with the Red Sox, according to the AP. The deal is pending a physical. Lugo will play shortstop and could be a candidate for one of the top two spots in the batting order.

The New York Daily News reports that the Mets have made an offer to Julio Lugo. The Cubs and Red Sox also are expected to make bids on Lugo, who is a free agent this offseason. Lugo hit a combined .278 with 12 homers, 37 RBI and 24 steals in 435 at-bats with the Dodgers and Devil Rays last season.

The Blue Jays are interested in free agent Julio Lugo, but the shortstop is reportedly looking for a four-year deal worth $32 million, which is more than the team wants to pay, according to the Toronto Sun. "We'll just have to see what the final figures are," Ricciardi said. "We know what we can afford and if the bidding gets too high, then we'll go to Plan B. But right now things are up in the air and I don't know where we're going to land. We'll just have to wait and see how things play out." The Red Sox also have interest in Lugo.

"I heard they really tried to get me at the trade deadline, and I hope they come at me hard," said Lugo. "I've always liked that city [Toronto] and I like playing in that ballpark. "We have two schools of thought, and Julio and I are going to discuss it a little bit more [today] and I'm going to give executive vice president Andrew (Friedman) a call," said agent Dan Lozano.
