The Reds have reportedly signed Alex Gonzalez to a three-year deal. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the contract could be worth as much as $14 million. Gonzalez hit .255 with nine homers and 50 RBI for the Red Sox last year.

"Obviously, some of it is how [Cora] played [Monday] because he hadn't played two nights in a row all year," manager Terry Francona said. "Some of it is we're comfortable with Alex Cora out there and it gives Alex Gonzalez two straight days with [hitting coach Ron Jackson]. I think that could be beneficial also."

Manager Terry Francona is going to need to see an improvement in Gonzalez's bat in order to keep him in as the full-time starting shortstop, though. "I want to play Alex enough to keep him sharp because I think he's a good player," Francona said. "At the same time, if we quit playing Gonzo before he's had his chance to get hot, we're going to miss out on something." Gonzalez is hitting just .186 this season with four RBI and one run scored. Alex Cora would see more action if Gonzalez were to sit more often.
