On Friday night, the Cubs signed free agent Jason Marquis to a three-year contract worth about $20 million, according to the Chicago Tribune. Marquis was 14-16 with a 6.02 ERA for the Cardinals last season but struggled late, costing him a spot in their postseason rotation.

Jason Marquis said he felt "a bit blindsided" after being left off the Cardinals roster for the NLCS, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Marquis was 14-16 with a 6.02 ERA this year, and the rest of his stat line is just as messy (35 homers in 194 1/3 innings, 75 walks, just 96 strikeouts). A pending free agent, Marquis likely will not be back with the team next year.

Jason Marquis was left off the Cardinals NLCS roster, meaning Anthony Reyes will likely start Game 4 against the Mets, according to the team's web site. This move doesn't necessarily come as a surprise, but then again, manager Tony La Russa relied on Marquis way more than he should have this year, so nothing had been set in stone up to this point.

Jason Marquis was scratched from Friday's start due to back spasms. Marquis is expected to make his next scheduled start on Wednesday. Chris Narveson will make a spot start in place of Marquis.

Despite allowing 20 earned runs in 11 innings his last two starts, Jason Marquis will stay in the Cardinals rotation largely because of a lack of viable options, according to the AP. "At some point if there's a better alternative, whoever the guy is, that guy pitches," manager Tony La Russa said. "He's got some pressure to give us a better chance to win."

Jason Marquis was hammered by the Indians on Monday, yielding seven runs and 10 hits in 2 1-3 innings, according to the AP. Marquis has allowed 20 earned runs in his last two starts.
June 21, 2006
Jason Marquis, who had won six straight decisions, was pounded for 13 runs and 14 hits in five innings by the White Sox on Wednesday. He had to stay in the game despite allowing nine of the runs in the first two innings because the Cardinals bullpen was overworked in a 20-6 loss Tuesday night.

Jason Marquis agreed to a $5.15 million, one-year deal with the Cardinals on Tuesday, according to the AP. In addition to his salary, he could earn $275,000 in performance bonuses: $25,000 for 200 innings, $75,000 each for 210 and 215 innings and $100,000 for 220 innings. Marquis went 13-14 with a 4.13 ERA last season.
