Clement struggled in his rehab start at Double-A Springfield on Sunday, allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts over five innings.

Clement has been trying to get up to full game strength since spring training started as he recovers from right shoulder surgery, and he will start a 30-day Minor League rehab assignment when he pitches for Class-A Palm Beach.

Matt Clement could begin a rehab assignment as soon as early May, as he continues his recovery from right shoulder surgery, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has shown marked improvement in his arm strength, but the team noted that they want to make sure when he goes on a rehab assignment that he's really at a point where he has the ability to let it loose.

Matt Clement threw a pair of innnings in minor league action on Tuesday, according to MLBblogs.com. He didn't actually complete either inning, as each time they called the inning off when he reached a certain count, 20 pitches in the first inning, and 17 in the second. Clement reportedly had a lot of movement on his ball, but both his command and velocity were lacking a bit. He was pitching at 84-85 mph, and favorably hit 86 twice. Of the seven batters he faced, he walked four, struck out one, retired another on a flyball out and one reached on an error. He got three swinging strikes. That was a positive day for Clement as he continues to recover from shoulder surgery.

Matt Clement threw a bullpen session Friday for the first time since scaling back his activity to a long-toss schedule, according to MLB.com. "I was encouraged," Clement said. "It was one step, but I thought it was a good step. There was definitely a difference." He's close to getting back into a normal throwing program, but he won't be over his shoulder surgery in time for the beginning of the season, regardless.

Pitching coach Dave Duncan, happy with Clement's progress, has suggested the right-hander continue on the long-toss program until ready to take the mound. "He asked, 'Why even go on the mound?'" Clement said in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "We're getting so much out of the long toss. Let's keep pounding that so that when you go on the mound, you stay on the mound." Clement is coming back from shoulder surgery and won't be ready at the start of the season.

Matt Clement, who's coming back from shoulder surgery, will alter his throwing program in the coming days and is not expected to be ready for opening day, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I will be surprised if he's ready for opening day," pitching coach Dave Duncan said Sunday. "Even if he is ready, it's likely we'll have him compete somewhere else just to get him in the swing of things." Clement hasn't pitched since June of 2006. Anthony Reyes, Brad Thompson and Todd Wellemeyer now all have a better shot at opening the year in the Cards' rotation.

Matt Clement, coming back from shoulder surgery, had been throwing indoors and Tuesday was his first throw off a mound. He said it was similar to what he normally would be doing this time of year. "I expect a normal spring and, as of right now, I expect to do everybody else is doing," Clement said in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "The big thing is I don't want to waste my throws. The important throws have to be when I'm on the mound, and we'll see how my arm reacts." Clement has yet to try throwing breaking balls.

Matt Clement signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals Thursday. Terms of the deal aren't known, but it's thought to be an incentive-based deal that includes a club option for 2009, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Matt is a very talented pitcher who has been beset by injury the last few years," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement released by the team. "Based on our findings from his rehabilitation last season and his recent physical, we feel that he can be a solid addition to our starting rotation, and should have no limitations upon reporting to spring training." Clement, who did not pitch at all in 2007, will compete for a rotation spot this spring.
