David Ortiz hit his 51st home run of the season in the first inning of Thursday’s game to break the Red Sox record for most home runs in a season, according to the AP. Ortiz hit the first pitch he saw from Johan Santana over the Boston bullpen in right-center field to break the record set by Jimmie Foxx in 1938.

David Ortiz returned to the lineup on Tuesday after missing a week because of heart palpitations. He went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. "Some fastballs got by him that don't normally get by him. That will change," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "It was good to see him out there."

"There's nothing abnormal about my heart," Ortiz said. "But doctors would rather wait for final results of a test they are still performing on me, which won't be available until Monday." David Ortiz will remain at the hospital until Thursday as a precaution and for further tests on his heart, according to the AP. "David Ortiz is in the process of undergoing further testing to determine the cause of his symptoms," Red Sox medical director Thomas Gill said in a statement. "The testing and evaluation will continue throughout the remainder of this afternoon and evening. David will remain in the hospital Wednesday night. He is resting comfortably and is in good spirits." There's no timetable for Ortiz's return.

Having returned to Boston, David Ortiz was admitted to a hospital last night for several days of testing to determine the source of his irregular heartbeat, according to the Boston Globe. "We really don't feel like he's going to keel over," said manager Terry Francona. "He was tested the other night. A lot of people have these things. [But] we can't chance this. No way."

Ortiz was hospitalized last weekend with the same problem.

The Boston Herald reports that David Ortiz was held overnight at Mass. General Hospital last weekend to monitor an irregular heartbeat. Ortiz declined to speak at length about the matter, but did say he was admitted Saturday night for observation. As of right now, this doesn't appear to be anything that would sideline Ortiz, but that, of course, is subject to change.

"He's not hurt," said manager Terry Francona. "It just made sense to me. When he came back from the All-Star break he was tired, and that's not what you're looking for. That home-run hitting contest, part of me wasn't that sad when he fell out of it. I love him to death and I want him to get all the accolades he can get, but I knew he was going to be wiped out. And he was, I knew it." Ortiz isn't expected to miss any more games.
