Mike Lowell agreed to a three-year, $37.5 million contract with the Red Sox Monday, according to the AP. The deal has not yet been finalized, but it should be shortly. While Lowell will have a hard time repeating this year's numbers in 2008, he'll remain a solid third-base option in Boston.

Mike Lowell has received several four-year, $55-60 million offers from various clubs (including the Yankees, Angels and Braves), but the Red Sox are still standing firm with their three-year, $36 million proposal, according to the Boston Herald. In addition, there are also reports the Yankees would like to sign Lowell to play first base (assuming they re-sign A-Rod). It's unclear exactly how willing Lowell is to leave Boston, but it appears he's going to have to take significantly less money if he wants to remain with the Red Sox.

Mike Lowell is seeking a four-year contract, and the Red Sox have yet to offer anything more than three years. What complicates things even further is that the Yankees and Phillies are expected to come over the top with their offers, according to the Boston Herald. The Marlins shot down Boston's initial offer for Miguel Cabrera, but if Lowell signs elsewhere, perhaps the Sox will look at Cabrera (or Alex Rodriguez) more seriously.

The Red Sox have been meeting with Mike Lowell's agent for the last three days, but there's been no real progress to report, according to the Boston Herald. It appears it will take at least three guaranteed years for Lowell to stay in Boston, but it remains to be seen what he'll do if he can get another year or two from another club.

There's been speculation the Red Sox could get into the Alex Rodriguez bidding this winter, but team president Larry Lucchino has made it clear that Mike Lowell is the team's primary focus this offseason, according to the Boston Herald. "Any discussion of any other possible third baseman is going to be secondary and down the road, so I'm not going to get into A-Rod - he's a tremendous ballplayer, there's no doubt he is. He had an extraordinary year. He's still a relatively young player, there's so many good things you can say about A-Rod - whether he is the right fit here is a question we'll look at after we focus on Mike Lowell." The Sox hold exclusive negotiating rights with Lowell for the next 10 days, and they'd probably like to nail something down before he hits the market. The veteran has also made it clear he prefers to stay in Boston, which might be why he has yet to file for free agency.

Mike Lowell is set to become a free agent at the end of the year, but he would prefer to stay in Boston. "I love it here and would love to re-sign here. I'm making that clear," Lowell told the Boston Herald. Lowell is coming off a career season, hitting .324 with 21 homers and 120 RBI. It remains to be seen if he would be willing to take a hometown discount to stay with the Red Sox.

June 21, 2007
Mike Lowell sat out his second straight game Wednesday due to an ailing thumb, the AP reports. He initially hurt the thumb in the June 3 game against the Yankees. "I think there's been times where it's affected his swing," manager Terry Francona said. "He'll play every day. But I'd like to give him a chance to be OK."
June 14, 2007
Mike Lowell's name is the latest to be thrown into the rumor mill. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports there are “whispers” the Sox may be willing to eat part of his $9 million salary and the Twins would be interested in acquiring him. The biggest catch is that the Red Sox would likely only be willing to consider this if they are able to acquire Mark Teixeira from the Rangers.

Mike Lowell left Friday's game in the third inning after being hit on his left hand by a pitch. X-rays were negative, according to the Boston Globe. "It's just a bruise," said Lowell. "I mean, he got me pretty good. But I was just a little scared in the beginning because that's where I broke my hand in '03. But I was able to move it right away. It's just tender. Overall, it could have been much worse." Lowell hopes to play today, but manager Terry Francona could well give him a day to rest.
