Manager Jim Tracy stated Friday that he wouldn't place a limit on how many starts Ivan Rodriguez would get behind the plate this year, but he said he would watch for signs of fatigue, according to the AP. "I like players who don't want to get out of the lineup, who look like they enjoy the game, who don't duck pitchers, and he's a responsible player who wants to play," Leyland said. "Now there might be times when he wants to play too much. ... We do have a good backup (Vance Wilson) who also deserves to play."

Ivan Rodriguez started 121 games behind the plate last season, but he told manager Jim Leyland on Thursday that he wanted to start 140 games in 2006, according to the Detroit News. "One-forty," he said, "that's everybody's goal, to play every day. Every game I can play, I'll be there. You guys know that I'm an everyday player. I hate sitting on the bench." Pudge also added some pounds over the offseason, coming into camp at 195 pounds. Rodriguez said, "I went too low. I was at 187 pounds, 185, and I think for a catcher to play every day, that's a little light. Playing at 190-195 is going to be good for me."
