Mets manager Willie Randolph announced that Orlando Hernandez might not be able to make his start in Game 1 of the division series against the Dodgers, according to ESPN.com. It doesn't appear that there is anything wrong with El Duque, so the Mets may just be limiting his innings with a playoff spot all but wrapped up. "He's fine," Randolph said of Hernandez. "It's just a precaution." The Mets haven't offcially named a replacement for Hernandez, but it will probably be Oliver Perez, who is currently pitching at Triple-A.

Orlando Hernandez was forced to leave Saturday's game in the second inning after the Mets were ruled to have visited the mound twice, according to the AP. Pitching coach Rick Peterson talked to El Duque earlier in the inning, and manager Willie Randolph went to calm Hernandez after the pitcher almost started a brawl by throwing a pitch inside to Troy Glaus after already hitting Lyle Overbay and Aaron Hill that inning. The umpires met and decided Hernandez had to leave, which may not have been a bad thing for fantasy owners. He'd already allowed six runs on four hits and a walk in just 1 1/3 innings.

The Mets seem to be leaning towards Orlando Hernandez as a permanent plug in a leaky rotation as long as he continues to pitch effectively, according to the official team website. If the Mets were to option Brian Bannister and John Maine to the minors when they are activated from the DL, which is something that manager Willie Randolph is strongly considering, Hernandez would remain in the rotation. Hernandez is 2-1 with a 4.05 ERA and 20 IP in three starts this season for the Mets.
