Cristian Guzman underwent an MRI Thursday and was diagnosed with a "slap" tear in his right shoulder, according to the AP. He will try to avoid surgery, but if two weeks of rest and rehab do not work, he could miss much of the season. "It's a pretty serious surgery that has to take place and Dr. Kremchek felt, since he's not a pitcher, he's a shortstop, it was worth at least trying to rehabilitate it," GM Jim Bowden said. "If he doesn't get better over the next couple of weeks, we'll go ahead and operate."
March 16, 2006
Cristian Guzman traveled to Cincinnati on Wednesday to receive a second opinion on his injured right shoulder, according to the Washington Post. He was diagnosed with bursitis last Friday and hasn't played since. If he's not ready to open the regular season, Royce Clayton will move into the starting lineup, and Frank Robinson seemed to suggest that Clayton might stay there should he play well. "You'd have to have a pretty good track record" to automatically keep a job following an injury, Robinson said. "Let me put it that way: I'm not saying [Guzman] hasn't established himself to that extent, but I don't think he has earned that quite yet."

Nationals manager Frank Robinson said he might ask Cristian Guzman to start working out at second base and/or third base at some point this spring, in the event the club decides to have Royce Clayton start at shortstop, bumping Guzman to a utility role, according to the Washington Post. "I wouldn't do that with [Guzman] right away, because I want him to focus on the shortstop position," Robinson said. "But there may certainly come a time in spring training, if it looks like he might not be the everyday shortstop, that I would go to him and talk about working out a little bit at second base or third base. Absolutely."
