Ozzie Guillen said he is thinking about putting Jim Thome in the leadoff spot late in the season if the slugger needs more at-bats to reach 500 home runs, the AP reports. Thome, who hit his 493rd homer on Tuesday, is trying to become the 27th player to reach the mark. "I've got to go through (general manager) Kenny (Williams), but don't be surprised if late in the season you see Jim Thome leading off to make sure he gets one more at-bat than everybody else," Guillen said. "If he needs a couple of home runs at the end of the season, I'll give him one more at-bat than anybody else. Why not?"

The good news is that Jim Thome is expected to join the White Sox on Sunday after rehabbing with Triple-A Charlotte. The bad news is that the club is not expected to activate him from the disabled list until Monday, according to the Daily Southtown. That he's ready to get back in the mix Monday after recovering from a rib-cage injury is news all of his owners should be happy with, though. Hopefully, this won't be an ongoing injury.

Although Jim Thome took batting practice on Friday and reported no pain in his rib area, the White Sox want him to be cautious with his return to action, according to the Daily Southtown. He probably will begin a rehab assignment on Sunday, but he isn't expected to come off the disabled list until at least Wednesday. If he isn't ready then, the Sox may wait until after the weekend series against the Cubs, since they won't have a DH spot.

Although the White Sox will place Jim Thome on the disabled list Sunday, they don't seem overly concerned about his injured rib cage, according to the Daily Southtown. No MRI is even scheduled. "We don't expect him to miss more than 15 days," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "It's not a bruise. It's a rib cage. It's real uncomfortable to swing the bat, but it's nothing major. The results that I have from [trainer Herm Schneider] is it's not going to be bad. The best thing for him is just to concentrate and work that part (of the body) and be ready when he comes up."
