The Pirates have exercised their 2007 option on Damaso Marte, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He'll make $3 million next season, making him the team's highest-paid reliever. "He's been a reliable performer for us," general manager Dave Littlefield said. "We like what he brings us from the left side and what we have over there as a whole with John Grabow and Mike Gonzalez."

Damaso Marte won't be able to pitch for at least a few days because of a sore left shoulder, according to the AP. The Pirates hope Marte will be able to start playing catch Sunday and begin pitching in exhibition games sometime next week.

Damaso Marte returned to the Pirates' spring training complex yesterday to undergo an examination on his throwing arm, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He began feeling tenderness in his left shoulder a couple of days ago while pitching in the WBC.
