Damaso Marte has signed a three-year deal to remain with the Yankees, according to the Associated Press. Financial terms were not disclosed, but it is believed the deal is worth $12 million.

Damaso Marte had his 2009 option declined by the Yankees on Thursday, though the team certainly hasn't closed the door on bringing back Marte at a rate less than the $6 million he was to earn on his old deal, according to the Yankees Official Website.

With Matt Capps out until September, if not the rest of the season, Damaso Marte has inherited the Pirates closer role. Marte has the peripherals to be a solid ninth inning option. Over the last four seasons the left-hander has recorded K rates of 9.5 to 10.7. Couple that with his current 2.7 BB rate and he offers fantasy managers cheap saves for the next two months.

Damaso Marte missed his first couple of throwing sessions this spring due to the flu, so he opted to get in a session on Friday to try and catch up with the rest of the Pirates' pitchers, according to MLB.com. "He looked real good," said pitching coach Jeff Andrews. "He just wanted to get in and throw." He'll toss another session Sunday, face hitters on Wednesday and likley make his spring debut on March 3.

Damaso Marte was involved in a three-car accident Tuesday in the Dominican Republic, but he escaped with just a stiff neck. The lefty is still expected to be cleared to pitch in the Caribbean World Series this weekend. "We're going to be very careful, with how accidents often show their effects on the second day," GM Neal Huntington said in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "But right now, based on everything we know, he's fine. And this series means a lot to Damaso and his country." Huntington went on to say: "Damaso sounded surprised that anybody was making a fuss over it."
