Player Notes

Bob Howry has really struggled in the early going, but he think he is close to returning to his old dominating ways, this according to MLB.com. "If you're throwing 89 or 90 [mph], you can't throw it down the middle of the plate and expect it not to get hit," he said. "If you're feeling good and throwing 95 [mph], you can get away with a few pitches like that."

Bob Howry will be shifted from a late-inning to an earlier relief role in an attempt to figure out his issues. "It's probably a combination of [velocity and location]," manager Lou Piniella tells the Chicago Sun-Times. "I'm going to use him in a different role, with more steady work." Michael Wuertz and Kevin Hart will step up and see more work in the seventh and eighth innings. Fantasy owners can safely drop Howry at this point. Kerry Wood is the closer, and Carlos Marmol is the clear successor.

Bob Howry allowed two runs and three hits on Wednesday, and after two appearances this season his ERA stands at 11.57. With Kerry Wood also struggling in the pen to start the year, Carlos Marmol owners are starting to flash a shy smile thinking that his value could be on the upswing very soon.

The Chicago Tribune indicated last week that Kerry Wood was the favorite to land the closer gig for the Cubs. However, manager Lou Pinella said in an interview Sunday night on WGN that Bobby Howry is the early favorite based on the job he did subbing for Ryan Dempster last year and the fact that Wood's durability is unclear, according to the Tribune. "I have no inside information," Howry said. "Until you go through it and play it out in spring training, their thoughts and what they discuss behind closed doors and in their meetings is between them and isn't shared with us." This battle could go down to the wire in spring training, so be sure to keep a very close eye on it.

Bobby Howry saved his second game in as many days on Sunday. He is closing for Chicago while Ryan Dempster recovers from a strained oblique.
