Dave Roberts has swung the bat very well over his three rehab games at Triple-A Fresno, with a double, triple, home run and three RBI, according to the SF Chronicle. He could potentially return to the Giants sooner than the 45-to-60 at-bats manager Bruce Bochy estimated he would need. Bochy said, "I think he'll be a huge addition. With Dave's experience and ability to play left and center, his speed, his left-handed bat, it would be similar to getting a free agent because we really haven't had that all year. He has some weapons that can help us, whether it's coming off the bench or starting."

April 10, 2008
As expected, Dave Roberts is likely to undergo surgery on his injured left knee, according to the Mercury News. Roberts said he will likely need surgery to repair extensive damage to his left knee, and it is going to take months, rather than weeks, to recover. Roberts added, "The training staff has done all it can to keep me on the field. But I'm back at Square One. The procedure will be more extensive than the typical scope. I'm a positive person. Hopefully things turn for us, the last few months of the season matter and I can be a part of it. It's pretty imminent I'll get something done." Fred Lewis should get the bulk of the playing time in left field while Roberts is out, but Rajai Davis, Dan Ortmeier and Clay Timpner should see time as well.

Dave Roberts said he expects to have more freedom to swipe bases this season, now that Barry Bonds is out of the picture, according to the Contra Costa Times. "The way it played out (in 2007)... " said Roberts. "It was pretty clear we wanted him to get his at-bats. We weren't scoring runs early in the season, and he was our best chance. We had to put the brakes on so he could get his opportunities." Roberts stole just 31 bases in 2007 after stealing 49 in 2006, and we may see a boost this season.
