Kyle Farnsworth was slated to pitch the eighth inning last night, but he wasn't able to go after his back tightened up on him for at least the fifth time this season, according to the New York Daily News. "I could've gone out and pitched, but better safe than sorry," Farnsworth said. "I was throwing, I felt fine. It's the same thing it's been doing before. I've pitched with it and I've pitched without it. It's not a big deal." Farnsworth had been closing games before Mariano Rivera returned to action last night.

With Mariano Rivera being shut down for the rest of the weekend with a sore elbow, Kyle Farnsworth will close games for the Yankees until Rivera returns, according to the AP. Farnsworth has two saves and four blown saves for the Yankees so far this season.

Manager Joe Torre stated on Friday that Kyle Farnsworth would step into the closer role in day's that Mariano Rivera is unable to go, according to Newsday. Rivera has been dealing with a strained elbow as of late. Farnsworth has notched two saves this year for the Yanks.

Although Kyle Farnsworth was wearing a bulky wrap on his lower right leg yesterday, his condition seemed to have improved, according to the New York Daily News. Farnsworth was hit on his right leg by a line drive on Friday. He was no longer using crutches yesterday, though the Yankees expect him to miss at least a few more days of action.

The New York Daily News reports that Yankees GM Brian Cashman admitted that Kyle Farnsworth could headed to the disabled list after being hit by a line drive last night, but added that "I would be doubtful that the DL is a decision we'd have to make by (today)." X-rays came back negative, and he was diagnosed with a bruised right calf.
