The Phillies covet a pitcher to upgrade their rotation, and A.J. Burnett's name is coming up, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. Toronto is known to have interest in acquiring a shortstop, and Phillies' prospect Jason Donald has garndered some interest from a few teams around the league. Catcher Lou Marson and outfielder Greg Golson are two other players who interest the Blue Jays, although the Phillies are not likely to part with Marson, who could fill a need for the club sometime in the near future.

A.J. Burnett, who has been hampered by a fingernail problem this spring, allowed seven runs and eight hits in 5.1 innings of Toronto's 15-7 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. The Phillies lineup literally hit everything Burnett threw, many of the hard hit balls were against Burnett's flat breaking ball. The team continues to blame his poor performance on his nail issue. At some point the team either needs to allow him to heal, or check the velocity on his pitches.

A.J. Burnett had control issues on Monday as he lost his second game of the spring. He allowed four runs on four hits over four innings of work against Pittsburgh, with four walks and no strikeouts. He must still be having problems with his right fingernail issue, evidenced by today's performance.

A.J. Burnett got through a bullpen session on Tuesday without any problems, according to the AP. Burnett broke the nail on his right index finger when he slammed it in a car door on Sunday. While he'll lay off his curve for 10-14 days, it appears the malady shouldn't affect his preparation for the start of the regular season.

The injury will keep Burnett from throwing his curveball for 10-14 days. He won't miss any spring starts, but obviously Burnett won't be able to work on his breaking ball for a little while.

A.J. Burnett is the only one of the Blue Jays starters who has yet to face live hitters, according to the Globe and Mail. The team is claiming that Burnett has been told to take it easy all off-season to make sure his arm is strong for the season, and it appears they will continue to "baby" him with the hopes of keeping him healthy enough to hurl 200-innings this year. If he does reach that total, Burnett certainly has the talent to be a top-20 starter this year.

The Blue Jays are having A.J. Burnett take a slightly relaxed throwing program this spring by tossing fewer bullpen sessions than usual, according to the Toronto Star. "We want to build him up more, just make sure he is ready," manager John Gibbons said. "You want to get him out for 30 plus starts." Burnett spent two months on the DL last season, so hopefully the plan will help him stay healthy for the long haul.
