Cubs GM Jim Hendry plans to talk to Alfonso Soriano in person before making a public comment about whether his new star should play in the Dominican winter league, the Chicago Tribune reports. It is believed the Cubs would rather not have him participate, for fear of injury.

Chicago radio station ESPN 1000 reports that the Cubs have inked Alfonso Soriano to an eight-year deal worth $136 million. The Cubs have yet to announce what they plan to do with Soriano, but it's possible that they'll try him out in center field.

The Astros have offered Alfonso Soriano a multi-year contract, according to the Houston Chronicle. Terms of the offer aren't known, and club officials have not confirmed the offer, but Soriano is reportedly looking at a seven-year deal in the $120 million range. Soriano hit .277 with 46 homers, 41 stolen bases and 95 RBI for the Washington last season.

The Phillies are expected to make a strong run at Alfonso Soriano, according to the AP. New Phillies first-base coach Davey Lopes, who held the same position with the Nationals last year, has raved about Soriano. "They said he wouldn't hit that many homers in D.C. because of the ballpark, but he made that a small ballpark," Lopes said. "Pound for pound, nobody hits the ball as far as this guy. He has so many pluses it's ridiculous. He's an even better person off the field."

Manager Ozzie Guillen indicated on Tuesday that Alfonso Soriano is not what the White Sox need, according to the Daily Southtown. "A lot of people are asking, 'Oh, are we going to bring this guy (Soriano)?' " Guillen said. "Well, how about the rest of the guys? We lead the big leagues in runs scored. The Detroit News reports that the Tigers are among the teams that are showing the most interest in acquiring Alfonso Soriano from the Nationals. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports has indicated that the Yankees and the Mariners are the other teams. Craig Monroe would likely be a part of a deal between the two teams. Soriano, who is hitting .282 with 29 homers, 59 RBI and 23 steals, is set to be a free agent at the end of the year.

The $10 million set a record for the highest salary awarded in arbitration.
