The Phillies have repeatedly said that pitching is their main priority this offseason, but they still need to find a third baseman, and Melvin Mora has apparently caught their eye, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Mora has a no-trade clause but is likely willing to waive it to go to a contender. "I can't tell you right now what I'm going to do," Mora told the Baltimore Sun earlier this month. "But I want to be on a winning team. I don't want to be like, 'Let's make the fans wait 6 more years and then we're going to try to start winning again.' You don't want to deal with that."

Melvin Mora will leave to play winter ball in Venezuela this week, and while he's there he'll split time between third base and the outfield, according to the Baltimore Sun. Mora hasn't played outfield but 2003, but he could be moved there if the O's ever decide to shift Miguel Tejada to third base (assuming they don't trade him first).

Melvin Mora could be willing to drop his no-trade clause if the Orioles want to move into a rebuilding stage, according to the Baltimore Sun. "I'm already prepared for it," said Mora. When I signed the contract, I left a lot of money on the table so I can make that decision." If the O's do decide to deal Mora, two potential stumbling blocks are that Mora wants to play for a winning team, and he would also prefer to stay on the east coast.

August 3, 2007
Melvin Mora, out with a sprained foot, will report to the club's minor league complex in Sarasota, Fla., today for a two-game rehab stint, according to the Baltimore Sun. "I want him to get four at-bats on Friday and four on Saturday," manager Dave Trembley said. "I want him to DH both days. After both games, he's going to stay out after and take extra batting practice and take extra ground balls and conditioning. That will be a good barometer for where he is." Barring any setbacks, Mora could rejoin the O's on Sunday.
August 2, 2007
Melvin Mora, on the DL with a sprained foot, could begin a rehab assignment as early as Friday, according to the Baltimore Sun. "Melvin ran the bases today, ran them real good. He ran hard," interim manager Dave Trembley said. "If he comes in tomorrow and gets clearance from [head trainer Richie Bancells] ... I talked to Melvin today about going out on a rehab for a couple of days and I think that's what's going to happen."

For the first time since being placed on the DL with a sprained ligament in his left foot, Melvin Mora was able to take batting practice on Friday. "We're getting more and more baseball activities with Melvin," interim manager Dave Trembley told the Baltimore Sun. Orioles third baseman Melvin Mora was placed on the disabled list Saturday because of his sprained left foot. The move is retroactive to July 13. Melvin Mora said he expects to return to action Thursday, following the All-Star break. "I don't know if it's going to be 100 percent, but I'm going to play," he told the Baltimore Sun. His bruised left instep was only supposed to cost him a game or two, but he ended up missing the final seven contests before the break. That means you'll want to check to make sure he's actually ready as Thursday nears before sticking him back in your lineups.

Dave Trembley says there's a good chance Mora will play Sunday, albeit the interim manager has been overly optimistic about Mora all week, and yet the third baseman has yet to see an at-bat since last Sunday.
July 6, 2007
Melvin Mora missed his fifth straight game on Friday with a bruised left instep but won't be placed on the 15-day DL, according to the AP. Mora isn't moving well enough to play in the field, but Interim manager Dave Trembley is comfortable using him as a pinch hitter but not as a DH. Mora is expected back at full strength after the All-Star break.

Melvin Mora was held out of the starting lineup for the fourth straight game on Thursday. Mora is dealing with a bruised left foot and was available as a pinch-hitter, according to the AP. He had hoped to get back in the mix Thursday, so hopefully he will be in the O's lineup this weekend.

Mora said that his foot was so painful that he "couldn't even step on the floor" yesterday and he said the swelling prevented him from wearing a sock on Monday. "It's just a bruise," Mora said, adding that X-ray results were negative. Interim manager Dave Trembley was confident a stint on the disabled list wouldn't be necessary.
