The Royals designated Paul Phillips for assignment Friday in an effort to clear room on the 40-man roster for free agent signee Jose Guillen.

Paul Phillips was designed for assignment Saturday, making room for Jason LaRue off the disabled list. Phillips hardly played for the Royals in his time with the club this year, going 2-for-10.

The Royals recalled Paul Phillips from Triple-A Omaha on Friday, according to the AP. He is replacing the injured Jason LaRue on the roster and will serve as John Buck's backup. Phillips was hitting .154 in 16 games at Triple-A.
