Wily Mo Pena signed a two-year extension with the Nationals on Thursday, according to the Sports Ticker. He will receive $2 million in 2008, and he has a mutual option for 2009; the Nats will have a $5 million club option for the slugger in '09, and Pena will receive a $2 million player option if they decline it. Right now, Pena figures to see the majority of the playing time in left field next year, but it's possible he won't play every day, depending on what the Nats want to do with Elijah Dukes.

Wily Mo Pena (swollen hand) was not in the lineup Saturday and he's not sure when he'll be able to play again, the Nationals official site reports. Pena did say he felt better Saturday, a day removed from taking a pitch off the hand.

Wily Mo Pena left Friday's contest in the seventh inning after being hit on the left wrist with a pitch, according to the AP. Tests were negative and the injury is being diagnosed as a right wrist contusion. The Nats consider Pena day-to-day, and it's unclear if he'll be able to play over the weekend.

Wily Mo Pena was not available on Tuesday night due to a bruised left foot, and he may sit again on Wednesday. "We'll see how he is," manager Manny Acta tells the Washington Post. "Even if he's not that well [Wednesday], then we'll just shut him down because we have that day off Thursday. That will give him three days."

The Red Sox traded Wily Mo Pena and cash to the Nationals on Friday in exchange for a player to be named, according to the AP. The move was made to open up a roster spot for Clay Buchholz, who was recalled to start against the Angels today. Pena, who hit just .218 with five homers in 156 at-bats with the Red Sox, will certainly see more playing time in Washington than he did in Boston, but it remains to be seen if he'll be an everyday player. Perhaps he'll platoon with Ryan Church in left field.

Are Wily Mo Pena’s days as a Red Sox numbered? The Boston Globe reports the team is actively looking to deal him for an outfielder who hits right-handed and can play center. Pena had no fantasy value in Boston, so a trade could only help his stock, although it is highly unlikely he’ll get a starting gig anywhere.

Wily Mo Pena went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in Tuesday's loss to the Blue Jays, and he also had an error in the field, the Boston Herald reports. Pena is hitting just .143 on the season and is in a 3-for-21 funk, though he's been pressed into duty the last three games while Coco Crisp deals with an oblique injury.

Wily Mo Pena will get his first starts of the year on Monday and Tuesday, according to the AP. He's expected to start in center field in place of Coco Crisp on Monday, and he could spell J.D. Drew in right field on Tuesday with lefty Gustavo Chacin on the mound.

March 12, 2007
Although Red Sox manager Terry Francona wants to play Wily Mo Pena often this season, it's unlikely the outfielder will get 400 at-bats, barring an emergency situation, according to the Boston Herald. "He’s going to play left, right and center. We’d like to get him enough at-bats where he can do some damage," Francona said. "At the same time, if he’s playing every day, something went wrong, but we do want to play him enough where he can have that bat be potent." Pena is hitting just .250 in 20 at-bats this spring.

Wily Mo Pena and the Red Sox avoided abritration by agreeing to terms on a one-year contract worth $1.875 million on Friday, according to the Boston Globe. It would have been the first arbitration case under GM Theo Epstein. "We're certainly not afraid to go," Epstein said. "We were very well prepared, but reaching an agreement with a player is a positive step. Both sides are satisfied."
