Chicago RHP Jose Contreras wasn't terribly dominating on the mound against Cleveland this evening, but he got the job done to help his White Sox earn the 6-5 win over the Indians. Contreras pitched six innings to allow four runs (three earned) on six hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

Contreras walked four, struck out two, and threw only 56 of his 92 pitches for strikes. He escaped with a no-decision, but fantasy owners will judge him more harshly.

Jose Contreras, who was scratched from his last start, had a successful outing on Monday as he retired 14 of the last 17 batters he faced. Overall he allowed three runs and six hits in 5.2 innings. Contreras lost 17 games last year with an ERA above five and a half, so he has a lot to prove this year though as he appears to be nothing more than a staff filler at this point.

The White Sox are expecting big things from veteran right-hander Jose Contreras this year, notes SI.com. They think part of Contreras' problem last season, when he was 10-17 with a 5.57 ERA, was psychological. Contreras was served with divorce papers on Opening Day last year. This spring, the report are he is in the mid-90s with his fastball. Fanball and RotoTimes reside in St. Louis, so we need to see that mid-90s heater... to believe it.

In an attempt to improve over those frustrations, coaches are working with Contreras in experiments with various arm angles and pitching techniques. “I want to pitch more three-quarters or higher because last year I pitched too many down low so my velocity came down,” Contreras said.

Jose Contreras held the Rockies to an unearned run and one hit over three innings Thursday, as he tries to put last season's struggles in the rearview mirror, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "This year, I prepared hard physically and mentally, and I feel good about it," Contreras said afterward. "[Last season] was the worst year of my career." The Sun-Times noted that Contreras went through a divorce last year, which played a role in his struggles. Hopefully, he'll be more focused this year and can turn things back around.

Jose Contreras overcome mechanical flaws and off-field issues late last year posting a 3-0 record with a 3.15 ERA over 34.1 innings of work in September. Contreras is expected to carry his 2007 September into April and turn around his 17-loss season. Sources close to the team report that Contreras has put in extra work this winter so he can come into Spring Training, and eventually April, with better command of his arsenal.
