As expected, Jose Contreras will miss the rest of the season after leaving his last start with a strained right hamstring, according to the AP. Contreras finished the year with a 13-9 record, 4.27 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 134 strikeouts.

Jose Contreras likely will be shut down for his final two starts unless the White Sox miraculously re-enter the wild-card race, the Chicago Tribune reports. Contreras has had cramping problems in his legs over his last two starts. "I need to talk to him about it," Ozzie Guillen said. "He is under contract for the next couple of years, and I want to make sure [he is healthy]. If we don't need him, there's no use taking the chance it might get worse." The White Sox enter Sunday's play 5.5 games behind the Twins in the AL wild-card race. Brandon McCarthy, projected as a starter next season, relieved Contreras for three innings Friday night and would take Contreras' place Wednesday in Cleveland.

The move is retroactive to May 5, so he'll be eligible to come off the DL on May 20. The club is expected to recall knuckleballer Charlie Haeger from Triple-A Charlotte to start tonight. Contreras hopes to be recovered from his pinched sciatic nerve to return when eligible.

"(The injury) came completely out of left field," pitching coach Don Cooper said of Contreras. "He wasn't feeling so hot. It didn't look like he was moving around all that good. It would be a minor miracle if he could start on his day, based on how I saw him walking around on Sunday." Contreras could miss at least his next two starts.

"We took it out for a little test run, and it was as much mental for him as it was physical," pitching coach Don Cooper said. "But the bottom line is he's feeling good." He is slated to throw a side session on Wednesday and will start on Saturday, barring any setbacks.

"It's just a freak thing and it looks like it will calm down nicely," trainer Herm Schneider said. "Structurally, the elbow looks fine. We won't keep him out longer than we have to. If he comes in [Thursday] and says he feels fine, we'll go right back to business." Contreras has stated he is a "little concerned" about the issue.
