That wasn't even close. Whoever the scorekeeper was absolutely denied major-league baseball a nice no-hitter, right there. That's sad. It's just sad. April 11, 2008
C.C. Sabathia was torched on Friday as the A's batter the reigning Cy Young winner for 12 hits and nine runs in 3.1 innings. Yes, it's time to be worried. Perhaps all those innings have taken their toll on his arm, but even if they haven't C.C. has allowed 18 ER in 14 innings for a 11.57 ERA marking him as perhaps the biggest flop on the hill in the early going.

Sabathia has failed to pitch six innings in either of his two starts and his ERA sits at an uncomfortable 7.59 as of this writing. Sabathia is too good a pitcher not to bounce back, but perhaps all those innings last year will effect his performance slightly this season, and not in a positive way.

When the previous season is over, we know who we're going to be facing in the opener. Give me another ballclub to start the season with. Obviously, with the year we had last year, we shouldn't even be in the league. In a way, maybe it's good. This gives us a chance to surprise a lot of people. Last year when they sang the national anthem, we were already down by a run. When we took the field, we were down by seven runs." Sabathia is set to go against Mark Buehrle today.
March 26, 2008

March 21, 2008
C.C. Sabathia, who surrendered three earned runs and eight hits in six innings on Friday, has been handled gently this spring. The Cy Young winner threw too many pitches and worked too many innings (241) in his stellar 2007 campaign. The Braves recorded just one hit in his final three innings against Sabathia who is rounding into form as the regular season approaches. Sabathia had pitched only nine innings coming into Friday's six inning gig against the Braves.
March 6, 2008

February 14, 2008
C.C. Sabathia announced on his official website today that he has cut off contract talks with the Indians, saying "there will be time after the season for the Indians and my representatives to discuss my contract status." Of course, the Indians can hardly afford to lose Sabathia for mere draft picks if he demands a Johan Santana like deal and signs elsewhere this fall, so it's possible he could be traded at some point this year.
February 10, 2008
C.C. Sabathia appears content with the amount of dollars that the Indians are offering but not the length of the contract after seeing the contract Johan Santana received from the Mets. "There's no question C.C. wants to stay here and there's no question we want to keep him here," GM Mark Shapiro said. "The only question is can we find a business deal that is deemed to be equitable and fair by both parties?" Sabathia will likely want a 6-year deal, the Indians have not yet gone beyond four years. Sabathia is only 27-years-old and has won in double-digits while hurling at least 180 innings in each of his seven seasons. That Cy Young on his mantle certainly doesn't hurt either. Cleveland Plain Dealer
February 5, 2008
The Johan Santana deal has set the market for C.C. Sabathia, who will become a free agent after the 2008 season, and even though the Indians may not be able to afford to keep the lefty, GM Mark Shapiro believes it will be up to Sabathia whether or not he ends up staying in Cleveland. When asked to comment on Santana's contract and how it pertains to Sabathia, Shapiro told the Cleveland Plain Dealer: "You're asking the wrong person... There have been recent deals signed by pitchers as talented and capable as C.C., and in a more similar market than ours. But none of that matters. The only thing that matters is how relevant C.C. and his agents feel it is. Not to shift the burden to them, but I can't answer you how relevant it is." One thing Shapiro does know is that he can't see the Tribe dealing the reigning AL Cy Young winner. "I can't present you with a scenario where it's acceptable to us or to our relationship with our fans that involves trading C.C. or examining trading him," said Shapiro.
February 4, 2008
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Indians made a four-year offer to C.C. Sabathia at the end of December (which included 2008). It's believed the new money in the Indians' offer to Sabathia is worth between $68 million and $72 million from 2009 and through 2012. The six-year, $137.5 million extension Johan Santana signed Friday with the Mets will probably make that offer to Sabathia insufficient. Sabathia is set to become a free agent after the 2008 season.
January 31, 2008
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that when Johan Santana breaks the bank by inking a multi-million dollar deal with the Mets, it will essentially stamp C.C. Sabathia's ticket out of Cleveland, as the Indians aren't going to come anywhere close to the $130 to $150 million Santana is likely to get to keep Sabathia, who is set to be a free agent after this season. "If Santana signs this contract, it will be another added reference point to establishing a market value for C.C.," Indians GM Mark Shapiro said. "It will be another contract along with Peavy's, Halladay's, Zambrano's and Carpenter's. How relevant it is is up to C.C. and his representatives."
