Manny Ramirez, who has missed the last 24 games with a strained oblique muscle, will return to the lineup tonight against Oakland, according to the AP. Manager Terry Francona will bat Manny second in order to hopefully get the slugger an extra at-bat before Jacoby Ellsbury replace him in left field later in the game.

At this point, you have to wonder if he'll play again before the regular season ends, much less be ready for the playoffs.

I don't see it happening." Manny has been taking batting practice, but his oblique still bothers him when he runs. The Red Sox seem hopeful that they'll have Manny for the playoffs, but it remains to be seen in what condition he'll be in.

Manny Ramirez still felt pain from his oblique injury after doing some running drills on Monday, putting a timetable for his return on hold, according to the Boston Herald. "When he runs he feels it," Francona said. "It has not gone away.... Running yesterday didn’t go as well as he had hoped." The wise move may be to just hold Manny out until the playoffs, although the fact that the Yankees are now only 2.5 games back in the race for AL East title may cause the Sox to think otherwise.

The Red Sox continue to be cautious with Manny Ramirez, who has been out since August 28 with an oblique injury. "He needs to clear himself," manager Terry Francona told the Boston Herald. "The medical people have gotten fairly aggressive, and he's swung the bat fairly aggressive, but there has to be a peace of mind and confidence from himself that he can go play the game and not hurt himself. You can really make some disastrous mistakes trying to read somebody else's body." There is still no firm date for Manny's return.

Even though he didn't want to sit, Manny Ramirez got a routine day off Sunday, according to the Boston Globe. "We had been going back and forth suggesting days for the past 10 days," Francona said. "We've got to [sit him] at some point. I told him what I want it to be is the best for you physically. We kind of went back and forth on it last night and today. Then he finally said the two days in a row will do me some good." Hopefully Ramirez can shake off his .245 batting average and turn things on when he returns after Monday's off-day.

Despite all of the trade requests in the past, it appears though, at least for now, Manny Ramirez is happy in Boston, according to the Boston Herald. "Manny is at peace with his situation in Boston," said Gene Mato, one of Ramirez's representatives, yesterday. "He has indicated to me that he would look forward to the opportunity to retire in a Boston uniform." Of course, as we all know, Manny's attitude can turn at any time, so enjoy this while it lasts.

"Manny's going to be here ready to go March 1," Epstein said. "He's got a family situation. Red Sox pitcher Julian Tavarez said on WBZ-TV that Manny Ramirez will not report to camp until March 1, because Ramirez's mother is undergoing surgery, according to the Boston Globe. Manager Terry Francona said he hadn't heard that information, though the last information he received was that Ramirez was in terrific shape and prepared to arrive on time.
